In Bakhmut, Russia is desperately trying to change the narrative of this war. It's one of the few places where it is not in retreat. Its advances here have been slow and costly, but Russian forces have been gaining ground.
There once may have been a logic to Russia's focus on capturing Bakhmut. In the early summer it had taken the nearby cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Bakhmut was meant to be next, with the expectation that Russian forces would then march on towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
But that was before Ukraine launched its surprise counter-offensive in the east and south. Russian forces have been pushed back further north. The cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are no longer in range of Russian artillery, as they were in July.
..."Russia" at great cost gains rubble (again).
Bakhmout has little strategic significance now since Ukraine liberated Kharkiv Oblast and Lyman. So even if Bakhmout eventually falls, it will not change anything with regard to the final outcome of the war and Ukraine's final victory.
But Ruzzians are so stupid. They have lost all control and seem to lack strategy and cohesion. Most of the troops in the Bakhmout offensive are PMC Wagner Mercenaries. They probably get paid by the ammount of land captured. Their soldiers are ultimately cannon fodder to make the Oligarch who owns the business Billions of Dollars. Therefore, war is the commodity.
Ukrainians are defending successfully because their defences are well entrenched. but there are not many troops there. And the Ruzzians are getting grinded down losing dozens of men with each push.
The only strategic value is the 2 higways heading north west and south west, and the morale factor for Ukraine holding on since Ruzzia wants bakhmout. But even if it falls, there is no chance for the Ruzzians connecting up with other units as the highways now lead to nowhere as Lyman and Kharkiv have gone and they are unable to trap Ukrainian forces further north and east.
