...was their a (powerful) Church in Russia before Putin? The Archbishop shows a lot of gratitude.
...are you denying that the Archbishop in Moscow acts independently, and against the Ecumenical Patriarchate (of Constantinople), in Istanbul?

This denial to pay in Rubles doesn't make sense. In reality nobody pays in Rubles, everybody pays in Euros. The Central Bank of Russia is presumably converting those Euros to Rubles and then paying Gazprom in Rubles. But for that to be possible the CBR should get rid of Euros in Russia's financial market. Is there really any investor either Russian or foreigner willing to buy Euros by paying in Rubles??
Under the decree, European importers must pay euros or dollars into an account at Gazprombank, the Swiss-based trading arm of Gazprom, and then convert this into roubles in a second account in Russia.
The European Commission said last week that if buyers of Russian gas could complete payments in euros and get confirmation of this before any conversion into roubles took place, that would not breach sanctions.

This is how well these sanctions have been put in place. Clearly they were not designed to stop trading, just make it a little more difficult. This way another party has to be in between and they make a few quid too.
But this must begin to hurt the dollar though.
