Taking advantage of the latest CY car subsidy scheme…

Postby Get Real! » Wed Dec 08, 2021 1:21 am

I’ve got a 32 year old banger (which does run like clockwork) that I've had for years and been using in and around the village for all the heavy/dirty chores etc, but after reading about the latest generous government subsidy scheme I decided to part ways with it in return for the whopping €7.5K subsidy… that’s a lot of money to ignore!

So I’ve already applied for the scheme electronically and now gotta wait till the 20th when applications close and they make their final decisions. I stand a good chance of making the limited shortlist because at 32 it’s very old and thus a great candidate for this scheme plus I satisfy all the other legal criteria.

Of course, you gotta buy a new car as part of the deal so I figured I’d take the 7.5K from the scheme and put in another 10K of cash to get a nice little 1.3ltr or 1.5ltr manual hatch, for the wife.

And this is where you come in... which 5-door hatch can you recommend for say €15..17K?

Ok, I dug a bit further into the long and complex legislation of this subsidy (online PDF) and found something weird. It says...

Essentially it says that the new car’s CO2 emissions must be <51g/km !

Problem is... I think no such petrol car has been invented yet! :?

If they only meant these subsidies for battery cars why don’t they just fucking say so, so people won’t waste their time? :?

I mean, where the fuck are you gonna charge a battery car in Cyprus... do you plug it up Nico's arse?

We don’t have the infrastructure for electric cars in CY, so what kind of gimmick-subsidy is this?

I’ve sent an email to TOM.

The subsidy is 10k if you scrap an old car and buy an electric one,

Your budget will probably have to double though, and you will still have the issue about charging stations.

https://cyprus-mail.com/2021/11/25/ince ... -launched/

finding a car with less than 51g/km CO2 emission and within budget is also going to be problematic.

Of course, the government have made it difficult.

If you just end up scrapping the car, you will get 1,000 euro to buy a bicycle or 750 euro worth of bus ticket coupons......

if the government really wanted to move towards renewable energy, and offset some of the carbon footprint,

They would mandate that all new houses and apartment blocks must have photovoltaic systems installed plus a charging port for electric vehicles.

All buildings with more than a certain roof surface area, receive subsidy to install solar panels, etc...

But they dont want that.

instead they want a few people to buy expensive electric cars, where the electricity to charge them is still produced from expensive fossil fuels.

If you are living in a village or a small town why do you need a car. Get a donkey or a mule and a cart. it is perfectly functional and environmentally friendly.

There was always something suspicious about that 7.5K subsidy, because (out of memory) it was the same for electric car.

There's a lot of fraud from the car manufacturers regarding the certificates as well.
Wife bought a Mazda3 5 years ago to replace her old Honda Accord. Both 2.0 liter engines automatic.
Presumably the mazda 3 should consume 5.6L/100km combined, (there's a formula of what percentage the town usage Vs long trip usage makes the "combined"). It never achieved that, but rather about 9L/100km combined. That's the same as the 20 y.o. Honda we had...
I tried to complain to the local dealer, they had a million excuses, all about "ideal conditions".

TOM's reply this morning...

So I've replied asking for a LIST of cars that satisfy the criteria.

does their methane produce less than 50kg / km?

That looks like it could KO the driver who's sitting right behind, which is a hazard to other drivers.

To get <50g/Km CO2 emissions the car must consume less that 2L/100 Km.
This site here has some models:
https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/reco ... el-economy

Also Renault built a prototype that consumes 1L/100 Km.
https://www.renaultgroup.com/en/news-on ... er-100-km/

NB. I now envy my neighbor who bought a Skoda Octavia.. He told me it was extremely economical and I didn't believe him.
