Remote tech support targeting Cyprus

Postby Get Real! » Wed Jul 14, 2021 1:00 pm

Today I received a call on my mobile phone from a guy in India who fixes up Windows etc, I assume via remote support software like “TeamViewer” or something.

I quickly explained that I’m a colleague and he thanked me and moved on.

A lot has been written on other sites about such services and some idiots even go as far as pranking these poor guys who are trying to make an honest living.

There’s nothing wrong with remote software support and indeed the vast majority of Windows PCs out there are in extremely poor condition and could greatly benefit from such a service, if done right.

Seeing that they’re now targeting Cyprus, if you do get such a call it may not be such a bad idea after all; if you’re not carrying out any sort of maintenance on your Windows system yourself, so do ask what it costs etc and maybe give it a try.

The alternative would be to take your computer to a Cypriot computer shop and ask for a “Windows maintenance” and you’ll just get some blank stares... that’s how stupid they are here!

If I weren’t a techie myself I’d sooner trust a remote Indian than one of our clueless lads in CY!

Every Cypriot has a relative who can fix computers. I am lucky enough to have two such people in my family.

It is not worth the risk of allowing somebody who you do not know to control your machine.

I don’t see any risk on most PCs out there, who have nothing but family snapshots and the odd CV sitting on the hard disk.

You have to be joking me? :?

This is a very well known scam originating from India.

If anyone from india calls you, unsolicited, trying to sell or offer you tech support, hang up.

Your cards will get fleeced, they will create back door entries to your computer to access it at any time to spy on you and steal your private information.

There are enough videos documenting and exposing this "India tech support scam" on youtube.

GR, your personal information has been compromised and sold to these scammers. You were a target and he backed off when he thought you were a part of this scammer gang.

It makes no difference what is on there. What ever it is it can be taken over and they will not release till you pay.

Not necessarily, there are countless legit remote tech support businesses worldwide, including India.

There are scams for many things in life including car servicing, but that doesn't stop you from servicing your car just because 1% of them are scammers.

Quit exaggerating... if you want a phone directory of any city in the world I can show you where to get one for a fee.

An unsolicited call from India, offering tech support and requesting access to your computer is likely going to be a scam with malicious intent too.

Proceed at your own risk.

I am not trying to infiltrate your computer, and I am not offering you tech support.

You are not the only person these people are calling and most are probably not as tech savvy as you are.

But you do seem to be a bit naive.

Let me get the popcorn while the Indian infiltrators hack my computer...
