The government of Mauritius has long argued that it was illegally forced to give the Chagos Islands away in return for its own independence from the UK in 1968.
Britain later apologised for forcibly removing more than 1,000 islanders from the entire archipelago between 1965 and 1973, and promised to hand the islands to Mauritius when they were no longer needed for strategic purposes.

When you look at the deal struck of course the situation is not what it seems.

Former residents of the Chagos Islands who were removed to make way for a US airbase in the 1960s and 70s will not be allowed back, the government says. Instead, it has decided the Chagossians will be offered compensation worth £40m over the next 10 years.

That makes it about 4 million a year. Wow now that is some justice, ain it? What the fuck are they supposed to do with that and where are they supposed to live?

Heartless landlords will be barred from pursuing grieving friends and relatives of tenants who have died for thousands of pounds in rent, in a new boost for renters rights.
MPs are set to vote through Labour ’s Renters Rights bill on Tuesday, banning no-fault evictions and demanding landlords fix serious health hazards like damp and mould.

But more measures are also expected to be added to the bill in the Commons, including one preventing guarantors of tenants who have died being chased for excessive amounts of future rent.
“It breaks my heart to think that there are grieving families out there being heartlessly pursued for rent payments by landlords who are aware of the sad circumstances,” Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
One case, raised in the Commons by Labour’s Helen Hayes last year, saw a first year university student, who had taken on a private tenancy agreement for a property for the following year, take their own life. The letting agents forced the family as the guarantor to pay the costs for the remainder of the tenancy.

Retail assistants have accused a gig economy firm of “holding them to ransom” by making them pay a fee if they want to receive their wages within a month.

A new payment system brought in by YoungOnes, which supplies “freelance” retail assistants to many well-known high street stores, charges gig workers 4.8% of their earnings to be paid in one minute or 2.9% to be paid in three days. If they decline, they typically have to wait 30 days. Previously the workers were paid in three days, without a charge.

The data shared by the government shows that 85 per cent of suspects in group-based offences are white, while seven per cent are Asian and five per cent are black.
Among the seven per cent Asian suspects — two per cent are of Pakistani ethnicity, another two per cent are of ‘any other Asian background’ and one per cent each are Bangladeshi and Indian.
