Boris Johnson forgetting his iPhone password won’t prevent the government accessing his Covid WhatsApps, security sources have told i.
Four serving and former British intelligence sources say the WhatsApp messages on Boris Johnson’s old phone can still be accessed even though he claims to have forgotten his password.
The sources, hailing from MI5, MI6, GCHQ, and UK Government all say that the data is technically accessible and obtaining them without a passcode should be “no problem at all”.
However, they do say that there may be legal barriers in the way and the Government may need to prove “criminal justification” to obtain warrants to break into the former Prime Minister’s phone.
The sources claims come after Boris Johnson claims to be unable to handover WhatsApp messages from his old mobile phone to the COVID inquiry because he has forgotten the password to it.
The Times reported that Mr Johnson could not “with 100% confidence” remember the code for the device he used up until May 2021 and he suspected the Apple iPhone would erase data if he inputted the wrong password too many times.
Mr Johnson believes the Government has a record of the passcode and that security technical experts will be able to find a way to unlock the phone, sources close to the ex-PM told i.
It is understood that government-appointed “technical experts” were continuing to work “to recover material safely from the device”, according to Sky News.
