1878 June 4. Turkey sells Cyprus to England...... Hope they kept the reciept in case they need to return it.

Cyprus was placed under British control on 4 June 1878 as a result of the Cyprus Convention, which granted control of the island to Britain in return for British support of the Ottoman Empire in the Russian-Turkish War.

Svetlana don't worry Russia was a victim of Britain's imperealistic politics back then. Read this:

Cyprus became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1571 and the first Turkish community was sent to the island in the same year. The Ottoman State, in order to get back the territories lost to Russia in the 1878 Treaty of Berlin, rented the island to Britain in exchange for help, with the understanding that once the Ottomans got their territories back, the island was to be handed back to the Ottoman Empire. But when the Ottoman Empire backed Germany in World War I, Britain announced that it had annexed the island. The Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 confirmed the annexation of Cyprus and the island officially became a colony of Britain in 1925. At that time, the majority of the island’s population consisted of Greeks with a minority of Turks.

bigfatlondonboy I think you misunderstand, I do not hate and never hated anyone because of their race... what we are discussing here is history and facts...most of the texts I am putting in here is written by Brittish journalists and historians... you would be more than welcome to move here and believe me you will see first hand that all people of cyprus are amongst the most friendly and peaceful people in the world... you can find every document or help in the english language that is because we appreciate the goods that the brittish people have done for this country. However what I do not tollerate is foreigners to assume sovereignity in our land. This I guess would be the same for you and all the people of this world. It is not racist, it is not fascist it is the declared and recognised human right of self determination... i

I Have to agree with Strahd about the friendliness of Cypriot people, much warmer than any european countries I know; I have gained many good Cypriot friends. However, in business, things are rather different!
