For instance, they were instrumental in opposing the Australia Card or Identity Cards similar to what Cyprus has purely for the fact that it made surveillance and tracking much easier.
They don’t like things like that.

I didn’t realize that Australias didn’t need to have driving licenses as an ID to drive their cars on public roads!
How about IDs to open bank accounts?
IDs to check in for a flight?
Passports to travel abroad?
The driver’s licence doesn’t have medical records, social security info, and virtually every bit of information there is.
You can use it as an ID and police are only really allowed to ask for ID if you are suspected of some crime. The Australia Card was going to change all that, giving the state and police more powers and also be a central data base for every bit of information.
It was hugely unpopular and the GOP equivalent here in Australia bitterly opposed it in Parliament citing all kinds of things like privacy and police powers as well as surveillance and much more. The Bill was introduced by the Democrat equivalent here in Australia but it was defeated and never got off the ground.
Today, we still don’t have an Australia Card. We do have a Driver’s Licence, passport, Medicare card etc. Police are not allowed to ask you to identify yourself unless there are some emergency responses to a crisis or you have committed a crim or you are stopped driving a vehicle.
To check in for a flight, you can show your DL, passport, employment card, ASIC etc etc. That’s just to prove your identity, not to punch into a central data base and have the individuals entire information at their disposal.
