Actually, I do not support any soccer teams. Growing up in London, I did support Chelsea in the 70’s.
In the 70s Chelsea was the most racist team in UK and their supporters were also the most racist supporters too. They were the last team that did not have a black player. How the hell did you like them? It's not as if they were winning anything at the time.
My first game I watched was Arsenal against Chelsea and it ended 1-1. But in them days Arsenal used to wear their shirts backwards so it looked as though they were attacking. Good old George Graham, he knew how to win 1-0 and if not 1-1 draw.
Chelsea won the FA cup in 1970 and the Cup winners cup in 1971.
Which team got black players last is not even relevant in the 70’s and 80’s as the whole country was racist in one form or the other, except most of us did not know what racism was when jokes were made against the blacks, the Irish, the Pakistanis and so on. We were relatively new to the country without a word of the English language, and as we were learning the language, we were learning it how the country spoke it with racist connotations , so to us, it was what it was. Watching shows like “Till Death Us Do Part” and the “Black & White Minstrel Show” were entertaining at that time. Of course looking back, it was all wrong, but at the time, that was the life in the UK.
