Thinking back to my Trotskyist days as a student in the 1970's UK, I remember the far left as being the sole and little-heard voice of sanity protesting against the encroachments on civil liberties and fundamental rights under successive Prevention of Terrorism Acts in an atmosphere in which the population was being worked up into a disproportionate hysteria over the risk from the IRA's bombing campaign in Britain. Yet, the encroachments under these PTAs more or less melt into significance compared to recent events in the world, with everywhere suddently turned into police states and the entire planet having been placed under house arrest with elections cancelled, parliaments dissolved and governments ruling by decree. Yet, far from hearing a murmur of disapproval from the left about this, the left seems to be crowing for more.
It seems the left are as you say, wanting more restrictions and more loss of civil liberties.
Now it seems that anyone who complains is a fascist or neo nazi.
It's all pretty insane.
