Oh dear! New Zealand was being touted as the success story. All they did was impose such a severe lockdown that the virus did not spread at all so hardly anyone has immunity. On no! Now fourteen people have come down with a bug you have a 99.9% chance of surviving and with which there is an 80% chance of having no symptoms whatsoever.

NZ is a success to date. Only a zealot could or would try and argue otherwise. The numbers are plain and clear.

Deaths per million people to date

USA - 511
Spain - 611
UK - 608
Italy - 583
Germany - 111
France - 465
Canada - 238
Sweden - 571
Netherlands - 359
Australia - 14
Denmark - 107
South Korea - 6
Norway - 47
Finland - 60
New Zealand - 4

Not only has NZ had to date less death (over 2 orders of magnitude or over 100 times less, compared with places like UK, US, Sweden et al) from covid per head of population than any of these other countries it has achieved this whilst having no internal lock down restrictions at all between the 8th June and 11th August. Every single one the countries listed above , including Sweden HAVE had internal restrictions through this period, when NZ had none. Less death, less internal restrictions when measured in time since the outbreak to date in turn leading to date less impact on the economy. Like I say only a zealot could look at these numbers to date and not accept that to date NZ is an exemplar nation in terms of its response to date based on the actual numbers to date.

No doubt some part of you is secretly hoping that going forward, the virus will start spreading in NZ uncontrollably and these numbers will all start going up to be comparable with other nations. You might hope this or expect this but it has not yet happened. It is a prediction of the future, nothing more, and a highly biased and partial one at that imo. It is entirely possible that NZ will be able to track trace and isolate this recent outbreak, as it had already managed to do previously with a far high starting point for internal spread and also determine how the virus got in again so that such routes can be blocked going forward. At which point they will again remove all internal restrictions.

If you go on what has actually happened so far NZ is unequivocally an exemplar nation in terms of it's national response. Of course this reality does not suit what you want to be true so you just do the only thing you can - speculate that this success to date will prove to be unsustainable in the future.

No doubt the selfish and irresponsible person cited in the article above also believes as TD and CG do that the whole virus thing is over blown hype. Such behaviour driven by such ill informed beliefs can, does and will lead to Cypriots having their lifespans shortened, as well as lead to even worse impact on the economy as well.

Nice work !

Bizarre isn't it...? :?

The country that a couple of years ago was considering a 'Tourist Tax' to try and reduce the numbers has completely closed borders and destroyed the tourist industry...

And of course the virus won't just go away if you hide under the bed as NZ has just discovered...

I'm so glad I spent two months there last year... :D

The country did not just 'consider' such a tax it implemented it as of the beginning of this year, which if you were as big an expert on NZ as you think you are, you would have known.

Yet according to you on the 24 June the virus was then already rapidly dying out almost everywhere.

Just as I am glad that I got to spent 6 weeks there THIS year along with 60 odd friends and family from around the globe to celebrate my wedding to my NZ national wife and partner of the previous 25 years. And 6 weeks in 2018. and and and

We actually had tickets for Hobbiton but decided to pass and return to Auckland from Rotorua...

Just in passing...

Wiki wrote:Rotorua is a major destination for both domestic and international tourists; the tourism industry is by far the largest industry in the district.

I guess the place is booming now then...?
