I just visited my friend for a our daily coffee. His elder brother who moved to Sweden years ago was there so we started discussing the Cyprus problem, as you so often do. He told us of his experience back in 62. He moved to the UK in 58 and went back to Cyprus in 62. He got a ticket for £36 on an Italian owned boat to travel back to England via Venice.
Anyway, on boarding the boat he noticed the GC's and TC's were segregated. In his own words he said he didn't mind that but what he did mind was the TC's being given cabins in the crew section of the boat. He checked the GC's cabins which were for passengers but the TC's cabins were dirty and clearly for crew. He complained to a senior member of crew and was informed the allocation of cabins was chosen by the agent (Greek company). He pointed out there were empty cabins for paying passengers on the TC side so why weren't they given those cabins and again he was told the allocation of cabins was chosen by the Greek agent. He went and informed all the other TC's of this and they all left their dirty cabins and slept in proper cabins for paying passengers. The crew had to give in in the end as the TC's were determined not to be treated as second class citizens.
I came back to the office and told my elder brother about this. He said he wasn't surprised and told me about his experience in the English school he was attending. My brother was a good footballer and was always selected to the school team here in England. He went to Central Foundation in the city which at the time was an excellent school, probably still is. Anyway, he was never selected nor any other TC's to the football team in the English School in Cyprus until the Headmaster saw 3 TC's having a kick about in the school yard. The Headmaster watched them for about 10-15 minutes and went next to them and asked if they were in the School team. My brother answered, " no Sir we are Turkish so we aren't ever picked for the school team". The Headmaster said "well, we'll see about that" and within half an hour he called the racist cunt of a teacher to his office and ordered him to select my brother and his 2 friends to the team. All 3 TC's were regular players after that.
My dear GC friends, if, and it's a big if. If ever we get to reunite the island this kind of thing has to stop. We must see our fellow man as equal regardless of ethnicity. In the words of Caroline Flack, "In a world where you can be anything, be kind". I will add to that by saying BE KIND AND BE FAIR.
