Website closed for Sabbath!

Postby Sotos » Sat Nov 09, 2019 6:41 pm

While browsing the internet today (Saturday) I came across this US based company's website: https://www.qualitybath.com

Here is what I saw (and what you will see if you visit while it is Saturday in the US):

OKKKK... So your website is observing the "Sabbath"? Really? Your server is still working! Isn't that a sin? Maybe you should shut your whole server down then? (and by the way, I can close that overlay using the browser's Developer Tools and make your website work on "Sabbath" for me. So it is going to hell anyways!)

I wonder to what degree and in what ways is this analogous to certain types of shops being closed at certain times because of the influence of religion. I mean real physical shops ?

It isn't analogous and this is why it is funny. When a shop is closed it means that its employees don't work, so they could go to some religious event, or some celebration, or they could just get some rest etc. In this case we are talking about a website. The server is still running, the website is still there, they actually did more work to prevent people from browsing their website!

It's a clear advertising of the supposedly strict Jewish religion.
A public show.
Stupid Jews they are so obsessed with religion, traditional ceremonies and nonsense that no one can beat them.
Of course they are more than anyone obsessed with -- >

You have no idea about Jews.

The majority of them are no more religious than Cypriots or Greeks are.

Unless you are talking about the religiously fanatical Orthodox Jews which make about 5% of Jews?

Most of them do however take their Sabath quite seriously and they don't work on that day. Just like Orthodox take certain fast periods and feasts very seriously.

On average, I would place the Jews on par with Greeks, and maybe some Italians.

Also one thing about the Jews. They don't advertise their religion or try to recruit like some evangelicals.

Oh, only holy Australia has Jews. My landlord was not a Jew either. therefore you know everything about the Jews and nobody else has a clue..
I bet you didn't know that there could possibly exist ONE Jew in the whole planet that shuts down his website on "sabbath" simply because you assume the Jews are as religious as the Greeks.

...the issue is far more complex than it appears. Your assumption that because a server is on, it is working. Work as defined by a person religious, is work. While their Dogma may define it more precisely, in this case, work is defined as making money; the server is 'alive', but it is not making money.

...nothing prevents a Jew from working on the Sabbath, while it is the day of rest, to pray, to act in Grace, with Charity; it is no sin as Jesus, (a Jew,) demonstrated lovingly in a service, not to himself, but in effect, to the Golden Rule.

...frankly, i can respect this enterprise; honesty, integrity, has a cost not necessarily qualified by the performance of a bottom line alone. In God we Trust?

...i am not exactly sure what you find funny.

what was intentional, was its generality, any religious person; in this case. the Individual, demonstrates by closing his website to sales, that sales, is work. (n.b. the semi-colon which perhaps i should have included in my original statement).

First of all it is not just sales. They "disable" the whole website, even for browsing. And even if it was about sales, a website can take orders 24/7 without the need of anybody working. They could deal with the orders later if they wanted.
