What upsets me about me about all this is the fact that everyone seems to have immediately returned to their guns. I think it's important to take a look at exactly what Turkey is proposing and, just as importantly, the fact that Turkey has decided to make a proposal at all.
Recent history tells us time and time again how Turkey has refused to take the initiative and make progress on the Cyprus issue. There have been so many missed opportunities, and there is no denying it, but to say that one side is completely to blame is narrow-mindedness.
It is important, in my humble view, that we credit the fresh initiative. I'm saddened by fact that the Greek Cypriot foreign minister calls it "reheated food" (according to
BBC), because even if they didn't agree with a single letter of the proposal, they could have at least welcomed the initiative. Surely the Greek Cypriots want peace as much as the Turks, don't they?
By dismissing the initiative, Mr Iacovu has simply said "we're not interested". All peace agreements have to begin somewhere; if the sides can't even agree to sit down around a table, it means someone doesn't want to talk.
