Cut Turkish airlines off from Europe

Postby Maximus » Mon Aug 05, 2019 11:45 am

Turkey invaded Cyprus on July 20, 1974, and has not looked back. While Turks may say they did so to protect Cyprus’ Turkish minority, Greece’s return to democracy made any Greek plans to unite with Cyprus moot. Turkey’s subsequent second invasion in August 1974 was nothing less than a land grab followed by methodical ethnic cleansing.

not only the European Union and NATO, but also Turkey’s closest allies such as Somalia, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia, as well as every single other UN member rejects Turkey’s claims to territorial waters around Cyprus and by extension recognizes that the entirety of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone belongs to the recognized Cypriot government in Nicosia rather than the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

By sending ships into Cypriot waters to drill for oil and gas, Turkey is simply seeking to steal Cypriot resources for its own use. For all of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's anti-colonial rhetoric, he now presides over the most flagrant example of 21st century imperial exploitation.

The question then becomes, what will Europe do about it?

the European Union and the United States could respond to Turkish provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean by denying Turkish Air landing rights. Let the airline fly to Somalia, Sudan, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan, but there is no reason why European countries should support Turkey’s economy at a time when Erdoğan seeks to supplement it with theft.

Diplomatic hand-wringing on Cyprus has not resolved the problem for 45 years, and there’s no reason to suspect finger-wagging will be enough to do so now. It’s time the European Union and those committed to the post-World War II liberal order do more to show Erdoğan that the world has had enough of Turkey’s pillaging.

The solution is simple: Withdraw Turkey’s ships and end Turkey’s illegal occupation.

Amen to that, but alas whose listening???

Even Trump is back peddling on the F-35 / S-400 sanctions he is supposed to be imposing.

But the idea is good. The EU is not with us sadly, but with Turkey.

I dont think The EU wants a conflict. Who does?

However, Erdogan kind of counts on that so he acts brave and powerful and pushes his luck.

He might go too far.

There will come a time when the EU will have no choice but to push back and get serious. This is when you will really see what Erdogan is made of.

At the moment, I dont think the EU can be considered as a major power on the world or even regional stage if they cant even deal with Turkey.

So far, regarding external threats, the EU seems incompetent, hypocritical and weak.

Is the EU just a trading bloc wielding influence over its willing members states only? are the member states just paying them so they can tell their members what to do and have access to a single market?

I can understand why Britain wants to leave.

dream on.

instead of imposing embargoes on the tcs they should have imposed the sanctions on terggy for supplying weapons. but these weapons were americans weapons.

so dream on you have as much chance of imposing anything on terggy as you have pigs flying. terggy is the best guard dog of nato. there is nothong else to be said

dream on.

but just to get you to understand the way of the world. know your place in the world. cypriots have for too long deluded themselves that they actually have some power others do not have. well you aint ok.

here goes.

...does anyone remember Kuwait? What was the first war in Iraq about?

While Erdogan has piled so many issues into the Cyprus Problem, with oil and gas near exploitation in the Eastern Med., his neighbours anticipate hostilities in a united front as the East Med Gas Forum. It is not UNCLOS which Erdogan Ignores, but the Treaty of Lausanne; in that regard, all are equally threatened.

There will be discussions, with agreements as Historic, one Hopes. However to get there Erdogan cannot expect total supremacy, just as the "others" will not have things entirely the same, either.

...if a shot is fired, Turkish Airlines may indeed cease flights to Europe. And if he goes too far, he may find his isolation complete.

THATS WHY I VOTED FOR BREXIT TO LEAVE TO BE FREE NOT BOUND TO A COMMUNIST ORGANISATION DICTATING HOW WE GOVERN OUR COUNTRY. EU IS ON A DANGEROUS PATH WITH THIS IDEOLOGY IF HAVING A EU ARMY.

My take on this is Mustiejodu does not dislike the EU because it is communist but rather he labels it communist because he dislikes the EU.
