Georgia, Moldova and the Ukraine, all have sizeable orthodox communities yet relations with Russia have not been good. In Moldova, there is outright hostility. It is ok for Russia and Turkey to cooperate on agreements that are in the billions but if its tiny ole Cyprus, watch out it’s the Russian mafia. Im just scratching my head here. The three countries you mention that may have or had disputes with neighbors who are predominantly Muslims is not surprising. Many countries ( over 30?)in eastern euro- central asia have or had disputes with their neighbors.

it was an exageration to say that russia and cyprus are close to each other because of relgion alone.

Obviously the main reason is the ovelap of their strategic interests, as both see Turkey and the muslims in the region as a threat to their territorial integrity, Chechens in the case of Russia, and Turkish Cypriots in the case of RoC, both of these groups are supported by Turkey.
