So we come full circle and whatever other nations do around Cyprus has much, much less potential consequences for her.

I admit I slightly strayed off the thread, but I find it ironic that in Cyprus we recognise the aggression of Turkey and the aftermath of 1974 but are quite content to be 'best friends' with another country doing exactly the same thing Turkey did to this island but to another people.

I don't agree that bringing the S-300's back from Crete would be a solution! As Turkey is the only military threat to Cyprus that would just be a provocation and in all reality if the RoC National Guard confronted the Turks again ...... the GC's will lose the rest of the Island and they will get the same support they got in 1974 ..... zilch, nothing but hot air and sympathy!

IMO: We should be standing shoulder to shoulder with the Palestinians against the land theft and continuous aggression from Israel. We should be recognise the the pain of the Palestinian people as we expect others to recognise the pain that GC's feel. But the Palestinians pain started 26 years before 1974 and, unlike the GC's in 74, has gone on up to this day ........ continuously!

With all due respect to the Palestinian cause and their plight....but I think we've done enough shoulder to shoulder standing with the world's barefoot, oppressed and non-aligned freedom fighters.

Time we stood shoulder to shoulder with some geo political leverage instead.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where arms are required to counter balance those that have arms and bad intentions.

This is a sensitive area and I don't want to give the false impression that I'm in any way a supporter, I'm not, but...................... the ROC will never be able to counterbalance Turkish military power alone. The figures involved are pretty sobering.

In 1997/8 the Turks publicly threatened that if the ROC deployed S300 missiles they would preemptively attack them, blockade the island, or even go to war over the matter. I worked here at the time and whilst not involved directly in those events, was in a position to understand it as a serious threat. Under Erdogan I'd have no doubts at all. To him, I imagine it would be a God-sent opportunity to use hyped up nationalism in order to "unite" the people. Johnny foreigner - the threat. A regular trick used by dictators with serious domestic problems.

I'm not sure why you believe having 75 of these missiles, plus the huge paraphernalia of supporting hardware involved, would in any way increase your security. Clerides understood it was a miscalculation and acted accordingly. Which ROC politician would bring all that down on their people?

Whilst nobody suggests you run around in a turkey (bad pun) shoot there are other ways of enhancing your security, apart from what would appear to be little more than a suicidal gesture. You've waited 45 years I know but I think time is now on your side and there seem to be signs of the tide turning at last.

Unfortunately though, the foreign policy of the 'bigger boys' for Cyprus is to isolate her, so they can take advantage.

This is more overt from Turkey, and more covert from other so called allies.

Cyprus on the other hand, needs to be part of something bigger.

I would also add, not jumping the fence and squatting in their garden while trying to dictate how they should run their house.

In summary, know your boundaries and mind your own business and look to cultivate a positive relationship with your neighbors.

Something only civilized people would understand.

there is a particularly harrowing scene in this where the un soldier is in dali asking a gc national guard captain to let the tcs go as they are crying and the swine saying no, they are very happy. of course they were they were shedding tears of joy.
