Even if we say that those who support "remain" today are a bit over 50%, how many of those are in favor of the UK adopting the Euro and further EU integration? Certainly a lot less. So what is the point of keeping the UK in, when it is clear that sooner or later they will have to leave (or kicked out) because they are not truly on board with the idea of a united Europe?
Whilst I personally do not fear the idea of the EU as it exits today evolving in to a United States of Europe I accept the reality that many across Europe and quite probably a majority both EU wide and within individual member states do have such fears. Would you like to see a steady progression towards a 'United States of Europe' Sotos ? With an end goal of individual members states having a similar level of individual sovereignty to that which say a US state has within the USA. Do you think that such an evolution is 'inevitable' regardless of if there is majority support for it or not ?
