Do our resident aviation experts have any thoughts on what went wrong?
My own limited understanding is that the plane took off, had an issue, returned, in the process doing a complete loop round, than one video shows the plane coming in quite fast, doing a high bounce, smacking down hard then there is a flash and the fire develops...
The fact that the plane made a quick turnaround back to the airport to make an emergency landing, there had to be something critical wrong with the aircraft. As for the high speed landing, due to extra weight from unused fuel would required the aircraft to come in “hot” even if the flaps were deployed. If the flaps were not deployed due to hydraulic problem, then the aircraft would have come in even “hotter” to land, which often can cause a very hard landing.
From the video where it starts about half way down the runway after landing, the back of the aircraft is engulfed in flames. Was the flames already there before the landing or was it there after the landing? This is important information to know as to how the fire started. If the fire started from heavy landing where the landing gear struts punched a hole into the full fuel tank or was the engine(s) already on fire before it landed, made worse by possible fuel leak. Too early to know for sure what has happed until more information comes out from the authorities.
