Sounds to me like either the aircraft hit an unlikely “air pocket” at that low altitude or that the pilots retracted too much flaps for the speed they were flying. The fact that the aircraft continued to fly 4-5 hours to reach San Francisco tells me that there was nothing wrong with the aircraft, but perhaps, the problem with pilot error.
