The consequences can be deadly in air shows when the strict safety criteria aren't observed. I knew all the guys that died in this:

This guy gives a good explanation what may have happened in this air disaster as he does with other air disasters.

I'm amazed, given the number of aircraft (5) together in such a restricted area, particularly with the P63's known vis problems, there wasn't any height separation criteria in place.

Small consolation but I suppose it's fortunate the collision didn't occur in a way which would have put the debris down on the freeway or crowd. It could have made the UK Shoreham 2015 crash look like a minor incident.

Quite. In particular the fact which was pointed out in the above video that the two aircraft types, the P63 and the B17 had much different air speeds which increased the likelihood of a collision a probability when both aircraft types are at similar altitude. Since the P63 is the much smaller and faster aircraft, it had the greater responsibility to make sure where the B17 was at all times or else break off until the B17 was once again in view.

Reading this article yesterday, it brought back memories when a friend and I use to travel by bus in the early 70’s with our £2 Red Rover unlimited 1 day bus pass from North London to Heathrow airport and back taking about 4-5 hours return to do some plane spotting from the observation roof at one of the terminals, to see and take pictures of planes, especially to see the B-747’s land and take off. B-747 use to dwarf all the other planes on the ground like the Tridents, DC-9s, B-727s, B-737s, BAC1-11s and even the VC-10s, DC-10s, L-1011s, B-707s and DC-8s. At times I did not think the B-747 would take off the ground by not fully understanding the working aerodynamics of the wings and the trust from the engines at that time. Life was so much simpler for us young people back then to keep up with such hobbies.

Amazingly enough, about a week ago way before the above article on the B-747 was released, I was thinking to myself whether I would get the chance to fly on a B-747 Jumbo Jet again since they are fast disappearing from European and North American skies?

I had a mate who was an Air Eng on Nimrods. Last time we met he was flying on a 747 with Dragon Air. Just about to be made redundant. A job now extinct I suspect. He went on to work on a sim crew at Heathrow.

I flew with Cathay a few times on one of theirs, HK to Adelaide/Sydney, back in the early 90s. Pax in the Marco Polo section, topside. Unbeaten luxury. :D 8) Nowadays it's Easyjet and bring your own crisps. :(
