...i am not sure whether times have changed. The U.S. implies directly that they seek an exclusivity in their dealings in arms, and foreign affairs, with Cyprus. Russia will surely have something to say about that, Cyprus will be forced to make decisions which will only lead to it being more unsafe in that regard. Cypriots should not have to choose if they are "Russian" or "American". Is it enough if they may enjoy a life, freed from subjugation?
Let's not forget that the last time Cyprus was put in this position, it took the way of the non-aligned. Thanks to that tiny minority, in effect, a fulcrum was found on which to balance the opposing forces of power; what was an escalation to war was avoided. The 'stick' so to speak became a stick, without having to choose one end to be on top. Here too, Cyprus is a facilitator of exchange where security, greater security, is achieved through the dialog these forces may take to represent themselves united toward defending the Universal Principals, which make the Problem, in Cyprus, its antithesis. Makarios was a true Statesman, i think, for having courage, and foresight, for choosing Cypriots united, rather than a "Greek" Cyprus, the island torn in two. Unbending in that way he earned the name "Mak the knife" in the highest circles of world politics, always sitting directly to the right of the Queen in her photos at the Commonwealth, friends with Castro who called him an inspiring leader, such a contrast of influences he made.
...my question, have things changed? (except for the fact that our Leadership has changed.) What we really need, as Cypriots, and as Human beings, is that these two societies, Russian and Americans, have in their dialog, here, Hope that this dialog may grow.
