That phone is quite old, mine is running 8.1. But I didn't have this issue on my old Samsung with Android 4 either. Just buy your wife a decent phone and check if the plan you have is appropriate for her usage. Personally I am only paying €7.90 per month for the cheapest Primetel plan. I have another such plan for my wife, and calls and SMS between us are free. The plan includes 150 minutes, 150 SMS and 500MB but I combine it with the free Revolut debit card by Primetel so every month I have about 2.5GB of data. These for me are more than enough. My wife also sends a lot of messages, but she is using watsapp mostly now. For our 2 plans I almost never pay more than 7.90x2 (€15.80) unless I happen to call a 7000 or 7777 number which are not part of the plan minutes.

I can’t be buying her a new phone every year just to keep up with Android versions… that would be a total waste of money!

Why can’t one upgrade the Android version on a given phone, like we can do with Windows?

Depends on the phone...

Some manufacturers have their own version of Android and update it if and when they feel like it.

I have an excellent Xiaomi Mi A1 that runs pure Android and gets frequent updates direct from Google. €199 @ Public.

I bought that same phone in May last year as a gift to a relative for €166 from Amazon.es. It is a good deal even today, and even for €199.

Why is that? From what I know Google doesn't sell in Cyprus anyways, but if you are talking about the phones with stock Android then those are very good.

As much as I hate so called “smartphones” and never plan to own one, I still have to support my wife when the need arises... so here’s a “migrating” question for the smartphone gurus.

When you migrate from one smartphone to the next, what’s the fastest and most reliable way to get all the user's stuff from the old phone to the new one?

Do you hook it up to Windows via USB as a go-between, and just copy some directories across?

Do you use a special 3rd party migrating app, or do these phones have a special internal function to accommodate this?

Any pitfalls one should be aware of?

And are there any special things to lookout for when migrating from Android > Microsoft versus Android > Android etc, or is it all the same?

With Android you can set-up your Google account to handle your contacts, calendars etc so when you log-in using a different phone they will all be there. You can also use the build in back-up feature that keeps your apps and their settings backed-up on the cloud so they automatically re-download on your new phone. This doesn't work perfectly with all apps though, and personally I don't do this.

I save my photos/videos on the SD card, not on the phone itself, and I also use Google Photos to backup my photos/videos on Google (free for standard quality). When I get a new phone I transfer all the photos/videos etc from the SD card to my PC for backup, and then erase the SD card. The new phone will then show all my old photos also (from the online backup) and save new ones on the now empty SD card (and online).

So by just having your phone setup correctly you can change to a new phone very quickly. Then you can also use some specialized apps to transfer a few more things, like an app for transferring your SMS and Call Logs.

Beyond that it depends on what apps you are using. Some apps have their own "backup-restore" feature, and for some other you might need some 3rd party app to transfer them properly, but these are edge cases.We are talking about things like watsapp, Viber and generally apps that save tons of things on your phone (messages, photos, videos etc). Personally I don't use any of those.

When moving from Android to iPhone and vice versa (Windows phone is dead) things are obviously not as easy, but it is doable. Apple has an app for that: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... .movetoios but I never tried doing this.

You are just a stubborn donkey. I remember when you were saying that IE6 was the best browser long after it became outdated and insisted that tabs are useless

I also don't use my phone anywhere as much as some other people do because I am almost always near a computer. But a smartphone can be very useful when you are out. Any info you want over the internet from anywhere (sure, feature phones can have browsers, but they suck), a camera (very good even for midrange phones now), GPS - Google Maps shows traffic for Cyprus now which is very useful, voice recognition that works great even for Greek - so I can create a long SMS message in just 3 seconds, things like Spotify so I can have any music in my car, Android Auto so I can connect the phone to my car etc. Even simple things like calendar, alarms, reminders, calculator etc are way better on a smartphone. Just get a decent (about €200) smartphone and you will never go back to whatever old tech crap you are using now

Now for my advice, free of charge on this occasion.

Get one for your wife. This is innovation in your finger tips. Also, an IPAD if you don’t have one. When I travel, I only carry my personal IPAD for my own use. I don’t carry any other computers on overnights, but overall have 3 IPADs, 2 of which belong to work.

For an IT guru, I am shocked that you don’t like smartphones. Smartphones are a necessity in the real world these days.

How they migrate? Well you either save everything to the Cloud or do a back up to your computer of Cloud through ITunes. It’s all very seamless and stress free. When you get a new device, you just download all your settings and app purchases from your cloud, including notes, emails, and even photos, and music.
