Turkish Cypriots allowed to vote in May

Postby Agios Amvrosios » Wed Jan 18, 2006 12:49 am

Turkish Cypriots living in the free areas will be allowed to vote in the may election according to a new bill.

I consider this to be a very sensible step which should have been the case all along.

I am curious to see whether Turkish Cypriots will be allowed to stand for election.

I would not discriminate between a turkish cypriot candidate or greek cypriot on the grounds of ethnic background if he or she supported a truly unified intergrated cyprus with sensible economic policies.

I think I would vote for Bir no problem.

Bir for el presidente.

I think this is very sensible. The reason that this has not been the case is the 1960 agreements. According to those agreements the 18% of TCs should vote separately and they have there own separate seats in the parliament.

The constitution of the RoC forbids a turkish candidate from standing as a president, doesnt it? A TCs can only stand as a vice.

I heard that the vice president must always be Turkish?

We don't have ready-access to the cypriot constitution in Darwin.

ok.

I suppose it will be good propaganda for the RoC to have a TC president, but somehow I believe GCs will not be able to elect one. You are free to prove me wrong ;-)

Pezo, honest the god, I cannot follow you any more!

If that constitution broke down, meaning is not valid anymore, then which constitution does the RoC have today? Or you also meant to say that the RoC doesn't exist either!

are you a laywer kifeas

do i really have to explicitly say everytime the exact correct legal term?
obviously we have a constitution.
obviously not everything that is written in it is practised.
it doesnt matter who you and me decide to blame, there are sth written in that constitution that are simply not present for years now.
not to mention some of the most important ones.

I think it would be fantastic for PR to have a turkish minister show that Greeks and Turks can live together. They should the Turkish Minister a high profile portfolio like the ministry of cabaret dancing.
