I forgot to answer this point.
This article explains the major details. Doesn’t sound like Trump you said?

https://www.vox.com/2018/6/20/17485374/ ... port-taxes

I know the details.

Trump has whacked tariffs on meat imports from the EU, Canada, and Mexico.

I don't see a problem with that. The whole purpose of this is to ensure that imported meat from the EU, Canada and Mexico isn't cheaper and more competitive than US Meat on the US Market, so that US farmers can sell their product and thrive.

That is the whole purpose of tariffs.

Reh Paphiti, after I served it to you ready on the plate of what kind of tariffs Trump imposed on the EU Canada and Mexico, you come back telling me he imposed tariffs on meat???  Na mate, it's the EU in retaliation who imposed tariffs on American beef, not the other way round... Trump imposed 25% on steel and 10% in aluminum products

Trump knows very well that the EU, Canada and Mexico could do the same and they have the right to do so. It isn't personal, or a "war" or anything like that. It is just a protectionist fiscal policy. This is what Trump promised before being elected and now he is implementing.

Having said that, it doesn't stop the EU, Canada, or Mexico from cutting a deal. Australia, somehow is immune because of the AUS/USA FTA.

You seem to forget.

The Americans are not worried about any EU retaliation. It isn't about selling meat to the EU. They will however still be selling meat there.

It is about protecting the US Market for US Producers. That is what the Americans are doing.

And of course, with this way of thinking, they fully expect the EU, Canada, Australia to respond in similar ways and probably think you are all stupid if you don't.

To them, it's about putting America FIRST!

In addition, the EU, Canada, and Australia are not their big targets. they are more worried about the competitiveness of China and India. The EU, Canada, and Australia do not enjoy any competitive advantage over US products.

You do not know what effect Trump's policies are having on the GDP. All we can see is that since Trump has been in office, US GDP growth has accelerated at a good rate. Therefore, his policies seem to be working.

Accelerated?? How? Show me evidence that the US GDP growth has accelerated. The truth is that from 2010 it's increasing at an almost constant rate (3.8% on the average)

Also, the rate of unemployment has been decreasing in most countries after the GFC. That is what usually happens after a global Financial Crisis and Collapse. But don't tell me that Obama is responsible for all this growth because that is false. Obama was a globalist, and whilst this does encourage growth, it also is a burden on US employment and the USA had much higher unemployment in 2008. Most countries did.

The issue here is Trump's approach. His policies are different. He is a protectionist. He is one of very few going down that path. He is declaring war on Free Trade if it affects and destroys US industry and manufacturing and he is threatening US Companies with tariffs for products that are manufactured overseas. He is also threatening tariffs on imports.

he is also not signing the Paris Agreement or the UN Compact on migration. He is almost on the verge of telling the UN where to go.

We will all see soon enough who has the best approach. So far, the indications are that Trump is onto something big.

Trump imo is going backwards decades ago when every country was imposing tariffs to protect their own production.
Therefore other than been demagogic, he is actually proposing nothing new.
Considering all his tariffs have so far been retaliated I don't think he will achieve anything.

Australia's Economic Growth accelerated in the last 6 months. It accelerated significantly.

Australia was top of the OECD for a number of years. But even though Australia accelerated, the US accelerated by even more and somehow has managed to surpass Australia's 2.8% growth and now they are the pick of the OECD.

This was according to Australia's Treasurer.

So yes, they have accelerated.

And yes Trump is going against Free Trade. He is the only one to do so, and the last time there was this type of protectionism was in the 80s. But his policies are having positive affects. the fact that he is going down this path is refreshing because the USA is going to expose the lunacy of globalism.

We have seen Free Trade for 30 years now and all we see is our industries moving to China and India. Even our utility call centers are in India, China, Philippines. We want to go the other way now and try something different and you all should be very grateful to Trump and thank him.

...Paphitis, you should really quit guessing. Read a little news. The arrest warrant has nothing to do with patent infringement, it has to do with American sanctions against Iran that were broken. Indeed, security concerns you may have mentioned, patent infringement is just too easy.

...perhaps you've heard of "five eyes"? These products are not sold in your country due to the possibility of the Chinese government's capacity to spy through them. More importantly G5 telephony will not be available to you either (unless the security issues are resolved). Trump has already said he will use the arrest as a bargaining tool in his trade talks with China; sounds very much like a hostage for ransom situation, where the Rule of Law, Justice seen, he is willing to suspend, for such short term games. In doing so he has put Canada in the middle, and he has put every American executive in China in danger of the same. Nor will he make Huawei or China more a partner in the technical frontier where it is that they are leading, only an adversary more determined to fight for complete control.

...and quit with the "meat" thing, you are embarrassing yourself.

...from one of Australia's papers,

https://www.smh.com.au/business/compani ... 50m24.html

...indeed, the Canadian policy to trade with Huawei, and to open the consumer market to them, has great risks. It is not without its benefits, if in effect cyber security is toughened against any such threat, and, if China becomes a better ally, against the threats we are all facing, public denials or not.

Right, you are not telling us the full story here.

Huawei has purchased certain US Patent licences to produce and manufacture them in China. They entered into an agreement to never export to sanction countries like Iran, a condition they have violated. As a result, she has been arrested for her companies violations.

You can't just do what you want. And Canada would not have made an arrest if their were no valid legal reasons for the arrest.

And I wouldn't take any notice of the Sydney Morning Herald. it is Fake news. How on earth would they know that this was a five eyes cook up? What evidence did they put on the table for this extra-ordinary claim they made? Are they privy to the Echelon 5 Eyes now? The Sydney Morning Herald is just engaging in hyperbole. They are claiming that the 5 eyes met in Ottawa. I'm sorry, but the 5 countries would never have said this was an Echelon 5 Eyes meeting. If anything, the Defence Ministers of the 5 countries met, or some Intelligence Security Chiefs met. The 5 countries never use such terms, so why is The Sydney Morning Herald making things up? And I doubt they would mention anything about what was discussed other than perhaps stating they discussed "multilateral security arrangements" This isn't some James Bond film where all the Echelon double O 7s have lobster together. What total nonsense. Next they are going to be telling us that Penny attended. Plus the Canadian, US and Australian legal systems do not operate as an arm of the Intelligence Community or our Governments. They are completely separate.

The executive was arrested for numerous violations against US Patented technologies and for exporting these technologies to Iran. They are American Technologies manufactured under contract and the Americans have every right to restrict them to certain countries.

And btw, Australia is introducing the 5G wireless network nationwide. this is the most advance wireless network. The receivers for this network are an American design. I believe Apple is the first to release them. The 5G system is under a US licence, and was sold to Australia and probably China too. You are not allowed to onwards sell to Iran or to anyone for that matter, whether there are sanctions or not.

This is not a Chinese technology. Another bullshit statement. It's American as Apple Pie.

Huawei and ZTE are banned from Australia. This is because they are not allowed to provide 5G technology to Australia.

5G Technology is a US Patent.

There are a couple of issues here. Did Huawei have a US Licence to produce this tech? If they did no problem.

Second issue, did Huawei sell these technologies to Iran. We have sanctions against Iran.

Both these scenarios are highly illegal.

There is also another issue Australia has mentioned, which the USA or Canada have not. They are citing Security Issues as well. They do not want the Chinese to have access to the 5G network. This is probably why the Sydney Morning Herald have mentioned the 5 Eyes, but it is a very long bow. Makes good reading though. When Australia cites security concerns, they probably mean ears dropping - now see the connection to 5 eyes. There is a lot of hysteria that the 5 eyes can ears drop on our cellular phone conversations. This may be true. But the SMH article isn't.

https://www.engadget.com/2018/08/23/hua ... ia-5g-ban/

https://money.cnn.com/2018/08/22/techno ... index.html

So basically, Huawei and ZTE are in the shit! Their CFO has been arrested and will get her day in a US Court. The US Legal system is transparent, so it isn't as if the USA can just trump up the charges and make it up as they go along.

China can go fuck itself! It is about time people understand this. We DO NOT care if we piss them off or that they are our biggest trading partner. We are not Greece or Cyprus. This is Australia, Canada and USA we are talking here. We have enough money to feed ourselves for decades. We will not starve. We have our own technologies and we can forge new trade deals even without the Chinese.

Yeh we make money from them. But that doesn't mean we like them. It doesn't mean we need them either. OK?

Their Government isn't like ours. They are a totalitarian regime as well. We are the free world. FACT.

Paphiti you’re right. Australia isn’t like Greece and Cyprus when it comes to China.

Australia is fucked when it comes to China whereas Greece and Cyprus have no such issues or ties.

About a third of the 1 trillion dollars of Australian foreign debt is owned by China. They say jump, you’ll ask if they want a beer while watching.

Really? We are fucked are we? Not as much as China would be I can assure you. The only thing that will happen to us is a temporary downturn. China will however friggin implode because their industry will shut down because they are reliant on our resources. We control the taps! They are not so eager to threaten Australia, at least not now. We provide the materials and they provide cheap products for us. If all that is pulled, they are in the shit too. It is a delicate tight rope. And it doesn’t stop either of us giving each other shit like our overflights in the South China Sea. If this were Turkey it would be a Cassus Belli but obviously the Chinese are also afraid.

I don’t think you understand. We are not stuffed at all. They are not as important as they use to be because India is overtaking them as a trade partner. In addition, we have so many markets we can sell to such as the EU, US, Japan, India and Korea. Australia does not seem to worry that much when they embargo them. India was non existent just 10 years ago and now they are a huge market.

Australia stands up for itself is my point. It has just banned or embargoed 2 Chinese companies. The only thing Greece and Cyprus can embargo is .... fuck I have no clue DT. Perhaps you can help me out with that one.

All you do is cave in to the IMF and EU which own your arses now.

You are pushovers that cant or will not protect your own interests because you are a mosquito scared of your own shadow.

A quarter of your exports go to China that’s about 23%. One third of your foreign debt is owned by China. I’d say your big clumsy holiday island is as Chinese as a spring roll right now.

5 years ago it was more. Now India wants a cut and we can’t supply.

Don’t make any presumptions because we will not lose a quarter of our exports.

And if we do, they lose their production unless they can source the same resources from elsewhere which is highly doubtful. It’s a double edged sword.

We currently have half the Australian Navy patrolling the South China Sea right now being shadowed by the Chinese Military.

We are doing what Turkey is doing to Greece. And they still buy our stuff. Does this tell you anything DT? Wakey wakey eggs and bacy, sunshine!

They are more fearful of us and losing us as their supplier than the other way round and this is why they are always trying to negotiate with us.

But there are things we will not negotiate and the South China Sea is one of them.

Btw, our foreign debt is 17% of our GDP. One of the lowest in the world. China has more debt working to Australia with all the factories we have over there. So don’t talk about our national debt. It is literally chicken feed. China has a much higher National Debt than Australia does. Who owns that debt DT? Australia has a big chunk of it. Australia has a Trillion worth of their shares too DT. Australia is one of the biggest global investors on the planet because Keating was a smart Cooky mate. Every week, about 10% of all Australian workers pay packets go to the Australian, Chinese, US and European markets. You do the sums.

While you blokes are still asleep, Australians are watching the Chinese markets moving capital around in nanoseconds.

Don’t think you understand how economic geopolitics works Paphiti. You have zero leverage. About half of China’s imports come from the US, South Korea, Germany and Japan. They wouldn’t feel a dent if you stopped selling.

Australia on the other hand would lose 25% of your exports. That would destroy your fragile isolated economy.

One more thing, don’t go around repeating that military leverage on China stuff....someone might call the men in white. Australia has zero military leverage over China.

The Chinese defense budget is 228bn while Australia’s is 10% of that. There’s 780 Chinese vessels patrolling the South China Sea compared with your total fleet of 49.

Australia is an insignificant mosquito mate. It’s always amazed me that despite the resources and size of Australia it still remains such an insignificant player in world politics and economics. Is it the population that can’t compete with the Germanies and Japan’s of this world or is it just cause you’re out there in the middle of nowhere?
