Kidney transplants carried out in 2005 at the Paraskevaideio Surgical and Transplant Centre reached a world record in per capita terms, the Centre reported.
The Centre announced that 53 kidney transplants were carried out in 2005 with a success rate of over 90%, a rate considered to be one of the highest in the world.
Among those who received transplants are six Turkish Cypriots and one Greek national. Ten transplants were taken from cadaveric and 43 from live donors.
The first transplant of 2006 concerns an 18-year-old Turkish Cypriot student, whose father was the donor. The patient's health is considered to be progressing in a satisfactory manner.
Since its establishment in 1986, the Centre has carried out a total of 667 kidney transplants with the highest success rates in the world.
This record is good news for the Cyprus government, which is looking at ways of promoting healthcare tourism in Cyprus.
