The European teams come because the stadiums here are fantastic. For instance, when Liverpool or Manchester come, they play in front of 100,000 spectators. They don’t get to play in front of that many in Europe but in Australia they fill out the MCG which is like one of the biggest stadiums in the world.
They probably however do get a percentage from the gate.
There’s no way in the world a European team would pay out of its own pocket to travel to Australia for an exhibition match with an Australian team unless they were paid ridiculous money.
Stop kidding yourself… even the Americans pay top dollar for such exhibition matches to take place and we spoke very recently about how the Cypriot Kastanos showed up as “Barcelona” there!
They do! Not just the big clubs but we had PAOK, Aris, Panathinaikos and Olympiakos visit Australia too.
They like coming here because they think Sydney and Melbourne are great places, with the best stadia and training facilities.
Also, some of these big Euro clubs like Manchester City and PSV have interests in the A League. Big financial interests.
Plus a trip to Australia would probably pay for itself if you play in front of 100,000 people like they do.
Let me give you a scenario here of the exciting business opportunity that the CY Football Federation are just too friggin dumb to understand. If Apoel come to Melbourne, a very large Greek diaspora will get pretty damn excited. They play a game with Melbourne City and all of a sudden they are playing in front of 70,000 people. If they get just 1$ per ticket, they made $70,000 and have probable made a profit too.
