"TRNC" at loggerheards with EU

Brussels' Cyprus Objection Threatens OIC-EU Forum
The European Union's (EU) objection to the participation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with the title "Cyprus Turkish State" in a joint EU and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) forum could stall the upcoming summit.

The EU conveyed its concerns to Turkey about the definition accepted by OIC.

While diplomatic sources confirm the developments, it is said that the preparations for the October 4-5 forum in Istanbul continue; cancellation is not an issue.

Ankara continues its efforts to resolve the issue by taking the concerns of the EU into consideration. The EU, in addition to Ankara, also conveyed its uneasiness directly to TRNC Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat.

In a meeting held on September 1 in Lefkosa (Nicosia), Dutch State Minister for EU Affairs Atzo Nikolay told Talat, "Either write it as 'Cypriot Turk Community' or write nothing at all. 'Cyprus Turkish State' implies a wish of recognition, and the EU becomes disturbed by this."

The Netherlands currently holds the Term Presidency of the EU.

Talat responded to the issue yesterday, stressing that TRNC will push ahead with the "Cyprus Turkish State" banner. He added that he met with the Dutch Ambassador to EU member Cyprus and relayed to the ambassador that the Turkish Cypriots said "No" to the EU's request.

"I will then inform in a written statement that this meeting cannot be held," the Dutch ambassador reportedly responded.

TRNC participated in the OIC Istanbul meeting in June with the title "Cyprus Turkish State". The EU on the other hand does not want to face a similar situation in the upcoming joint forum.

Turkey held a joint forum to form the groundwork for a dialogue among OIC and EU member countries in February 2002 in Istanbul. During that summit the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks were discussed.

Interesting to see what will happen here considering its in Turkey and Turkey wants to be seen to be a "friend" of the EU and obviously a friend to the Turkish controlled Cyprus area.

Who will Turkey feels is the best friend to have?

Well right now Turkey has much bigger problems with the EU than this issue.

See here

Personaly I am totaly bemused by all this. Turkey has made such efforts to gain an accession date for EU entry and then at the last minute they throw it all into jepardy because of a rediculous 'anti adultery law'. Wierd!

ONE WOULD ARGUE THAT THE JOINT MEETING WAS THE BRINGING TOGETHER OF CIVILISATIONS AND THAT I LAUGH IN THE FACE OF PEOPLE WHO USED THE TRNC AS AN EXCUSE TO CANCEL OR NOT ATTEND.

How can we let this happen? one little island should not allow its internal problems overflow into the international arena and stop important meetings from going ahead, the cyprus problem is a cypriot peoples problem and as such should have been resolved by us as for talats insistence i find strange as being there is more important things than your label as if unification is strongly on the agenda then why this farce and the same goes for tassos.

But i have always said these leaders do not want unification.

If you put some full stops in to form sentences, and add some upper case letters then I might be able to make sense of your posting!!

No much but I'll do my best.

You will find as time goes on that RoC will have less influence. Currently they have Germany, France, Holland and others supporting them because they have their own anti-Turkish agendas.

But the pressure will grow on these racist countries - the only way forward for world stability is to bring Turkey, obviously a mainly moslem country, into the 'christian' (perceived) EU.

The latest development (PACE) allows trnc observers/spokespeople at EU meetings - next step is voting rights.

Yes simpletons usually have to try harder when it comes to things like reading. :D

On the other hand the way you state it, they will have to take turkey in sounds like 'blackmail' and that will only keep turkey out in the cold.
Thank goodness some of turkeys politicians have more sense and do not make remarks like yours(only just mind you)
