Russia and Turkey are bedfellows, they both want for different reasons Europe's decline. But that is competition, isn't it?
...indeed Cyprus is a locus for the interlocutors whose separate dramas are coalescing in the Naval power they can represent in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The crisis cannot be avoided, it seems Turkey will not let that happen; despite the hordes i do not despair, training will count, discipline, Turkey has neither, their ships are new. Turkey may yet release "them'' embedded in the EU fabric, and that may be, without Visa free travel with Europe.
...but how will NATO countries fight a NATO ally, it will count what Russia does? In any case an embargo may qualify as a just sanction on Turkey, if Turkey dares to put up a fight. I can imagine Greek Naval forces engaging the "Turks" with equal force this summer, just a day or two ago a Greek Naval ship was rammed and damaged. Turkey will engage for supremacy in these seas to disrupt the balance of power, and while Cyprus is a locus, it is more like a lever's fulcrum if he can control the seas around it, he will make the claim that he controls all the sea that represents a Continental Shelf that's "her's" (his Turkey).
The damage has been done, this is a prelude, do not forget to her own drillship arriving soon.
