Chinese restaurant "Dragon" in Nicosia review

Postby PvUtrix » Sun Jan 08, 2006 11:51 am

It's the first time we went to actually sit at that restaurant and it definetely will be the last...

When we came, the restaurant had only 1 couple dining and the waiter wanted to sit us (2 couples) right next to them. If the restaurant is empty why not space out the customers so they can have some privacy?! anyway... we asked for another table and moved...

We started our meal with half a duck, which looked more like a quarter, but it could be just us...

We also odered 2 sweat and sour chicken portions, which they placed on one plate and it did not look like it was 2, compared to single dishes we also ordered...

Drinks, we got 3 chinese beers, a mineral water, a tea and a bottle of water.

After the meal the manager came to ask us if we were pleased with everything, being honest we mentioned that we thought the portions were a bit small. He smiled and said that's the way they are everywhere... not true, with the ammount of money we paid there we could have gotten twice the ammount of food at another chinese restaurant... Not very good value for money...

When we got the bill we were in for another surprise, instead of 3 beers it had 4, instead of 1 mineral water it had 2, and it had 2 teas as well, instead of 1. Over 5 pounds over what it should have been. The manager didn't even come to appologize personaly, just knocked off 2.5% off the bill...

So check your bills at that place!

Have you tried the Tokyo restaurant in Limassol? I always check the bills. Usually I read the prices on the menu and I calculate the amount before they bring me the bill :P

I have a rule of thumb personally, I ALWAYS check the bills, irrespective if I'm at a coffe shop for a 5 CYP bill, a date at a restaurant or at a club with my friends for the 000 bill. Mistakes can always happen and of course, people can do "mistakes" on purpose. As for the Dragon, I've been a few times but not recently and it was a nice place for good quality food. Lately some friends have been there and noticed a decrease in food quality but not on the actual portions. Soto is Tokyo ok? Mmmm I should try it I believe....

Sure this place is expensive. I went there once but I dont think I will ever go again. I rememeber we were about 7 people and the bill was very high. Never again.

I think Tokyo in Limassol is japanese. or has both?

Tokyo in Limassol is excellent. If you like Japanese cuisine, then Tokyo is a winner (as far as a dining experience goes).

As far as the best Sushi rolls in Limassol, you cannot beat the restaurant (whose name I have forgotten) that is opposite the main round about in Lim. Cheap, but tasty

And last, but far from least, the BEST chinese take away in Limassol is easily PANDA. I have lived in the Asian region previously, and his food standard is very close to what gets served their. Admitedly he is a little pricey in some areas, but it is well worth it.

Obviously not a place to go  But sadly it's not just the little places that try to scam their customers.

My worst experience of an inflated bill was at the Holiday Inn J4 at Londons Heathrow airport. Coincidentally it was in the Chinese restaurant.

When I got the bill gave it a quick once over and took my card out to pay, as I was waiting for the waiter to return I noticed that tucked up in the sub-totals ect, in small print was the "Optional Service Charge" which worked out to the strange amount of about 11.5%, not small change on a £104 bill, as I almost alway leave a good tip (and I couldn't complain about the food or service, both were very good) I don't mind paying, but I didn't like the sly way in which this was done as I nearly left a tip on top, I asked for the manager and pointed out and queried the "optional" part but was told that "that's how it's done Sir"

I paid the bill without the option on my credit card and pointedly gave the waiter £11 telling him that was his tip.

I complained to the Holiday Inn European HQ and about a month later recieved a "looking into it" letter, which means in corporatespeak, nothing!

Tokyo belongs to Pagoda Group. And i think Pagoda has the best food. Personally i visit Chopsticks several times a month because 1. the food is the same as Pagoda, only less variety 2. the portions are very good even the half portion 3. it is much cheaper and 4. not that formal.

I tried Dragon once in the past and i found the portions two small. So i haven't been there since then.

Sure Tokyo is nice, but expensive.

If you like Japanese food, try the restaurant on the Makarious round about. I don't remember the name, but there is only Japanese place there. It is exactly on the round about, to the left of Griva Digenis. There is also Chinese restaurant in there (separate kitchen), but it's not very good though.

For Chinese I've always used Pagoda (good, but a bit pricey too) or China Town Restaurant (no delivery), in the tourist area where all the disco's are, close to Crossanteria and opposite Haagen Dazc cafe. Lately though I've discovered Jin Chao to be more than very good. I haven't ate in yet, but the delivery is very good. The food is very tasty, they bring a lot of food, and the prices are lower than anywhere I've seen so far. The only minus of theirs - no wontons, but I can live without that. :)
