Make sure the person is either a registered psychologist or registered psychiatrist' , and not an unregistered "psychotherapist" . The terms psychologist and psychiatrist are protected by law, and practioners who wish to legally use those tittles must be registered, and to be registered they must be qualified.
Psychotherapist is not however a protected tittle and there is no registration nor minimum qualification before anyone can call themselves a psychotherapist, Though there is an association trying to set standards and get legal protection to the tittle.
Reason I know this was that we got conned by an unregistered and insufficiently qualified person (who claimed at least one qualification he did not have while misrepreresenting the value of one he did possess) who unlawfully used the title psychologist, but who, imho, rather than helping us with our neurodifferent chldren imho did some psychological damage to them and also to my wife.
We worked out he was likely a narcisist who was trying to create issues he could help us with, and was then trying to "gas-light" us to create a dependancy on him. He tried to do this to me, but when he tried to psychoanlyse me to find issues he could use as leverage he failed.
We made formal complaints about him. He fled the Island.
