Key members of Turkey's HDP party arrested

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Nov 04, 2016 2:16 pm

Following on from the arrest of all of the key staff at the Cumhuriyet newspaper, which is closely aligned to the opposition CHP party, on Monday:

The two joint leaders of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic party (HDP) have been detained along with at least 10 MPs because of their reluctance to give testimony for crimes linked to “terrorist propaganda”.

The HDP was officially declared to have won 10.8% of the vote in the most recent general election and has 59 seats in parliament.

The Turkish police acted with brutal force against protests against these arrests held in a number of places :

I don't know. It's roughly the same demographic that supports Putin in Russia, Erdoğan in Turkey, Le Pen in France, Wilders in the Netherlands, Brexit in the UK and Trump in the US. There's a huge mass of disaffected, ignored people created by globalisation and it just takes a demogogue from the far right to come along and seemingly address their concerns, and they all move in step. Hopefully it will pass as the world economy moves out of crisis. In the meantime, I am surprised by the lack of reaction here. I thought the mad nationalists of the Greek-speaking world considered the Kurds to be their buddies.

is it a surprise? Its another outrage. Another disgrace to add to the list. I dread to think what the Kurds have in waiting from the Turks.

Erdogan, with his vision to become some kind of Caliph is dismantling Turkey from within and others will help him from without.

what is a disgrace is how the west does nothing against erdogan. i guess it has something to do with how many f35 they ordered recently.

Do you want the west to invade or just slap on some sanctions?
