The accompanying form creates the impression that it has come from an official EU body and you are being invited to enter a profile for free in an EU-wide register of businesses. In fact, the wording 'Updating is free of charge' appears in bold type near the top. Beware: If you read the tiny print at the bottom, you will see that this is actually an order for an insertion in a paid-for register for three years at a cost of 995 euro per year!

Hi Tim, this very same thing happened to me some 12 or so years ago. I updated my company's profile as it was ....free.
An invoice followed for similar amount, I responded in my usual polite fashion, told them to F ...OFF and stick their bill up theres.

End of the matter. Its a scam mate, just ignore the bastards.

In the old days it used to be for inclusion in an international telex (anyone remember them?) directory. Nothing changes.
