They start a war and when they lose it they want to turn the clock back.
They get rich by stopping the north with embargoes to wipe out competition and then when it goes wrong they want the EU to pay them compensation. Is this really what it is like to be a GC?
Cyprus: potato growers seek compensation for poor harvest
Disgruntled potato growers decided last night to stage another sortie into the capital next week to draw attention to their plight, their latest action since taking to the streets more than 40 days ago.
The group are asking for £12 million in compensation for a poor harvest, plus incentives to leave the profession. They claim to be on the verge of disaster as a result of increased competition since the island’s accession to the EU.
But the government has met their demands with a flat ‘no’, saying that EU law prohibits direct subsidies. Moreover, it insists state coffers simply cannot cope with the farmers’ demands.
According to estimates drawn up by the Finance Ministry, it would take £35 million to satisfy the combined money wanted by agricultural groups—including fruit growers and olive harvesters.
It was hoped that Thursday’s meeting between the potato growers and a ministerial committee would break the deadlock at the eleventh hour—before the holidays—but this proved to be wishful thinking when the farmers refused to withdraw their tractors from the Larnaca-Dhekelia highway.
The government says it will discuss only the agricultural plan that has been drafted and will not be intimidated by the threat of “dynamic measures.”
At a crisis session yesterday, potato growers from the ‘red earth’ villages of Famagusta decided to descend on the capital on Wednesday. It was not clear whether they would head for the Presidential Palace. They also refused to reveal whether they would be using their heavy-duty tractors or their personal cars.
