just Cypriots

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

just Cypriots

Postby peace4cyprus » Tue Jan 03, 2006 7:44 pm

Hello,

In Cyprus we have Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Maronite and Latin Cypriots.

The differences in our cultures, languages and religions should have been a good thing, culturally enriching our small island.

Unfortunately our differences have been exploited by foreigners and ruling elites and they were used as an excuse for conflicts that brought disaster and unhappiness to many innocent people.

Is it maybe the time that we, the people, should take charge and decide our own future for our common island?

Lets leave behind the artificially created differences and lets admit that we are all just Cypriots that love this island. We are not Greeks, or Turks or Latins. We are Cypriots. Even our genes are the same.

There is no way the Turkish Cypriots or Greek Cypriots can 'win' this conflict. Only Cypriots can win it because if Cypriots win nobody will have to lose.

Please do not repeat what you have already said many many times if it is irrelevant to the topic ;)

Thanks

peace4cyprus I couldnt have put it any better myself.

However that would be the outcome in an ideal world, unfortunately ideal worlds do not exist with countries such as USA, UK, Turkey throwing in there opinions and controlling what really happens. GC and TC used to live together without conflict (I have been told by my parents who used to reside in Kyrenia pre war). Both parties used to work together, socialise together, infact it was like they were the "same". Unfortunately idiots decided to step in, Namely Mainland Turkey, USA, UK and Greece to some extent and decide that TC and GC were different and had to be protected from one another.

It would be very difficult in resolve such a complex situation as it has gone on for to long. Mainland turks have been bought in and given illegal residency, the illegal troops in the occupied areas will also be an issue as they wont leave, The USA are just a pain in the backside, followed closely by the UK, and Turkey just like to claim every piece of land on gods given earth as their own. A resolution to this problem seems more and more unlikely everyday, (I pray that I am wrong with this) but I can see this ending as a very tragic event where once again thousands of innocent people will be killed and the island will either become Cyprus once again or another island of turkey, however the latter seems very unlikely due to Cyprus' admission into the EU.

P.S. This is merely an opinion, so no need to bite my head off if you disagree :)

Greek and Turkish Cypriots lived happily together under the Brits, even during and after the Asia Minor disaster. Thus, it is high time we stopped blaming "the others" for our misfortunes and admitt that we were the main purpetrators. The Greek Cypriots for their enosis vision (almost all of them) and the Turkish Cypriots for taksim (very few in the begining but many later). To think and believe that the whole world has been conspiring against us for decades now, is both absurd and unproductive as far as a better future is concerned.

Welcome to the forum Yiannakis,

Ok lets for arguements sake say the past was everybody elses fault but our own, we are Cypriots after all.
What about 2006? we cannot even arrange to meet on an official level to sort out our problems.
The past 2 years after the referendum have been a joke, both sides are doing their utmost to score points and the GC administration is refusing to even meet with the TC leadership. This is not solving anything its just excuses not to meet. The GCs are playing the EU leverage game to extract what they demand from Turkey, but this could take 10+++ years and may even end up with Turkey being turned away or them just giving up, which believe me will not be in GC communites favor.

Why dont the GC get onto the streets for a change and demand negotiation recommence? obviously they are happy with the current situation considering a high % of GCs support the leader and his antics.

Thankyou Viewpoint :)

I dont think what happened in 1974 can be blamed on any one country, it was a combination of errors by multiple parties which ended up in one big disaster. However I dont think the GC side just agreeing to the Annan plan which went to referrendum would have resolved the Cyprus problem. It would have more than likely stired things up even more which could then have turned into more disasters. I agree the past 2 years have been somewhat of a waste, however can you blame the GC for trying to negotiate and take back as much as they can? There are many issues of security and probably one of the major ones, Property.

Let me put it to you this way. The house you are living in now, say someone comes in and takes over. You are kicked out and forced elsewhere. For 30 years you have been kicked out of your house, and forced to move into another country, you basically lost everything you owned. Now that alone will pee you off pretty bad. NOW imagine after 30 years you were allowed back into your country but what once used to be your house isnt given back to you, infact you live in the area and see your place, and see others enjoying what you know belongs to you. That would make you furious, so furious actually that you would want to take a gun and go and shoot the person in your house. This is exactly what would happen if they agreed to the referrendum, not only that, some of the other points in the annan plan which seemed quite inappropriate such as the distribution of power etc. The government I guess is trying to do what is best for the cypriot people, but yes it is the actual people that need to get out there and do something about it.

Yiannakis tha knife cuts both ways, we are lucky to find our properties at all they have been erased from the earth as to rid any trace of TCs, how do you think that makes us feel? If Gcs were living there and looking after my families property I would feel much happier that visitng a baran land with no signs of life. Those memories for us have been totally erased, maybe it was done for this reason so that we do not feel part of the "RoC" have you ever considered that?

The referendum for me was the only time we were asked and were given the opportunity to make a change to the politcal crap thats always going on. It was a chance but we missed it, and there doesnt seem to be another one coming.
TCs are over the referendum, that really put them in their pplace and they know exactly where they stand with regards to unification and GC demands and mentality, they do not hold out much hope for any solution in the near future and no longer trust the EU for obvious reasons. All these devlopments contribute to emsuring we continue work closely with our only ally Turkey.

I really believe that the majority of TCs do not have any problem with vacating GC property once a comprehensive solution can be found that would address all these issues but GCs still continue to provoke bad feelings between our communities by embargoes in order to hold us economically hostage and individual legal actions to gain a hollow victories.

Again viewpoint with the A-plan. Still going on about it again(as if it was equal)
Again with your feelings again. No offense, but your feelings dont count when your violating peoples land on their behalf. You know what i want to know, lets say you were a GC and your land fell under the scenerario where you would get pretty much nothing for it, how would you react? Just wondering?

If it meant my family would live safely and in tranquility then I wouldnt give a shit about the land but I would expect financial compensation at some stage. Like the land our familys owns in the south, we expect financial compensation some time in the future but its a small price to pay for the safety of my family who have all grown up in the TRNC safely and without the problems of our dark past.

My father owns 64 donums in the buffer zone. Lets hope we have another year of peace for each and every donum we have lost.

And now that you raised your family on stolen land, and the people who wish to get their land back, aren't allowed to do so. You dont think that it is a human rights violation? You expect your family to grow with pride, its hate your actually raising them with. Im sorry, this is what is brainwashed into you and your just passing down. Not your fault, I apoligize.
I'm going out on a limb and just giving my thoughts, I think at this point for Turkey to get into the EU, the member states should all vote on the whole nation of Turkey and TCs to take at least 60 hours of anger management classes before entering the EU. Only then they might learn to reason.
