Being half-Cypriot, I have the luxury of being able to fill in my equal opportunities forms as "Mixed Other". Some of you may see this as a British issue. I agree it's difficult, we don't want to alienate anybody, but it's important that we maintain our independence. I never said we were "Black". We are "Cypriot", "European" according to the political map. "Asian" according to the geographical map. Both Europe and Anatolia are Greek words. We should use them both. Our European partners may be offended that people from the East have joined their club. I'm not suggesting we should take over. "White" has never been just a skin colour, and close inspection shows that it is neither an accurate description of the hue (even of the Brits) nor the heart of those who would claim it. Our independence is at stake, we should challenge those who draw up the equal opportunities forms to recognise us as an entity in our own right and neither be co-opted nor blamed by others for mistakes that we never made. I would challenge these forms myself, indeed I do by placing myself as "Mixed Other", however the community seems happy to sleepwalk into oblivion so long as the money keeps flowing. Won't anyone take a stand?
