It has been said that the only grouping left in the Turkish armed forces capable of staging a coup were the Gulenists. The main purpose of the Ergenekon trial was to rid the armed forces of secularists/Kemalists. Since then, the AKP one-party state has closely controlled who gets into the officer training academies to make sure that the armed forces will in future be made up of its own supporters. Given that we have witnessed coupist aircraft being shot down by regime-loyal aircraft, this coup did not appear to enjoy the full support of the military. If the Gulenists were behind this, and the announcement made on state TV by the coupists notwithstanding, one has to question whether defence of secularism was the prime goal. It has often also been said that coups can only succeed in Turkey if the USA backs them. It is too early to do anything but speculate. Kikapu's theory has merit to it, too. I don't think it was the answer, but if they were going to start it I wish they had managed to carry it through.
