The Cypriot version is the Ottoman version. What you're quoting is the Arab one.

in terggish it is mouhdar in greakish its mouhdaro

but going back to why the water smeels of chlorine. i thought all old people use chlorinated soap and it is that recycled water thats comes back in to your taps.

I think its the Greek word for Mukhtar or Mukhtaris . Most Cypriots would use Mukhtaris rather than Kinotarhis, roughly translated Kinotarhis means the community chief or leader.

Thanks. I could be wrong, but from what I have seen the term koinotarchis is used in urban areas. For example, our chap in Agios Athanasios goes by that title. Is it perhaps because the ones in villages have different functions from those in places where there's a municipality (e.g. s/he organises rubbish collection)? Or perhaps the two terms are synonymous.

I believe most people in Cyprus dont drink water from the tap.

I dont think it is advised to do so.

On the very rare occasions that I drink water, it is water from the mains supply, nothing wrong with it all.

Probably the same water is used in the KEO factory.

Here in Agios Athanasios we have both a mayor (koinotarxis?) who heads the municipal council and separately a Muhktar or Muhtar who certifies some documents for official purposes.
