Cyprus officials in stealth talks with Victoria Nuland on Turkish troop plan.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades is holding secret negotiations this week with Victoria Nuland (lead image, right), the US State Department official in charge of Turkey, Ukraine and Russia, on a plan to maintain Turkish military forces in Cyprus under the flag of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Anastasiades has sent his aide, Nicos Christodoulides (lead image, left), to negotiate in Washington; he met with Nuland on Monday.

After losing control of the Cyprus Parliament to an increasingly nationalist vote in an election on May 22, Anastasiades has remained behind at the presidential palace in Nicosia, where he met on Tuesday with the NATO official now conducting Cyprus negotiations for the United Nations, Espen Barth Eide. The Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, is due to met US Secretary of State John Kerry, on June 13.

On 22 August 2014, Espen Barth Eide was appointed United Nations Special Adviser on Cyprus. I don't think the article said or implied he was NATO affiliated but was UN affiliated and thus involved in any negotiations.

The pictures also clearly showed Nuland and the Cyprus representative sitting at the same conference table.

Yes, I apologise it does say that but, there is no reference anywhere else to him being allied to NATO ..... just the UN. Is it a typo? 'for' instead of 'with'? Other sources refer to NATO but don't mention the ...... NATO base suggestion. In which case, the question is .......... what have NATO, or the US come to that, to do with the Cyprus Problem ?

We'll have to wait and see whether he got it right?

Indeed. At meeting that took place in April, widely reported in the MSM at the time. There have been a number of such meetings, going back to at least 2014, widely reported in the MSM. There is therefore no secrecy about the fact that meetings are underway.

More useful to the thread; Why not explain how you think NATO is a significance in the Cyprus Problem discussions...... Cyprus is not a member ..... only the Turks ....... so any discussions would be related to Turkey's position in Cyprus. What would that be ...... do you see them packing up and leaving after 42 years as occupiers as a sign of their good intent?
