2016–17 UEFA Tournaments

Postby Get Real! » Sat Jun 04, 2016 11:42 pm

I'm getting excited again because soon we'll be able to watch our teams compete in Europe as a new round of Champions League and Europa league begin. :D

As you can see from the link below our league ranking has taken a tumble down to 18th place (from 14th?) and that I think means we're now allowed fewer teams to enter the competitions or something like that.

Anyway, this year I understand that our CL team will be APOEL Nicosia whereas in the Europa League we'll be seeing AEK Larnaca, Apollon Limassol, and Omonia Nicosia, so there's lots of football action heading our way! :)

The Wiki pages are already up and ready to go and the draw date for the first round being the 20th of this month. Some relevant links for now...

And of course…

Ok, that’s it for now to kick start our annual thread that’ll keep us busy during summer and beyond! :)

Btw, I hope DT will join and inform us of what to expect from APOEL during the first 3-4 rounds and whom to lookout for etc.

Same thing for Apollon maybe from Sotos (our Limassol boy) or maybe Kurupet, or Zenon, or anyone else who can brief us about them and I also wonder what’s happening with AEK and Omonia.

I’m pretty cold with the current state of our teams so any basic info contributed to the thread would be good to get us warmed up and excited. :)

Let’s have a little basic analysis of the teams people, and how you expect them to perform up to the 3rd round (for now).

Personally I don't care all that much. I might watch some of the games... especially if our teams play with known teams, but thats about it! I care more about our national team than the clubs... because with the clubs its all about the money. The only reason our teems do disproportionately good compared to our size is because Cypriots are disproportionately stupid in wasting money for football!

Cyprus is in better position than Poland and Israel in the ranking.

It's a bit early for an assessment of our teams' potential... I would like to see if they can manage some decent transfers this year. :-|

So far, I was disappointed to hear that APOEL is looking to get some players from Spanish 2nd division (WTF?). :x

What’s wrong with that? :? Their 2nd division is probably the same strength as our first!

Look, if you only accept 1st division Spanish players then consider hiring Anastasiades... I mean he was good enough for Barca when they offered him a position as a striker last year!

That only means they will get players like Codina and Estrela. Good luck with that.

Last year, a second division team from Italy (relegated to third division this year) beat Aris 6-0. So he's right, Spanish, italian and english second division are better than our first division.

Ok we have the draws:

CL Second qualifying round 12/13 July
-------------------------------------------------------------------

APOEL Nicosia vs ( The New Saints (Wales) vs (San Marino) Tre Penne )

Oh God... APOEL should enjoy a goal fiesta against any of these two although I think the Welsh should qualify.

EL First qualifying round 30th June
-------------------------------------------------------------------

AEK Larnaca vs (San Marino) Folgore

Banants (Armenia) vs Omonia Nicosia

Same with these two!

NB: Apollon enters the 3rd round.
