President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday he would not accept any downgrading of the Republic of Cyprus and added that the UN had handled the Istanbul incident poorly.

When Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci was invited to a dinner hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday night during the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, it prompted Anastasiades to shun the event and expedite his departure from Turkey. Akinci’s arrival had been unexpected and Anastasiades had been informed by the UN of the last-minute surprise, which also included a meeting between UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Akinci.

Asked whether he thought he had been ‘set up’ by the United Nations, Anastasiades said on Wednesday night on the sidelines of the SEK conference in Nicosia, that it was more a matter of “poor handling “which will not be tolerated”.

“I do not accept in anyway the downgrading of the Republic of Cyprus” he said.

“A bicommunal dialogue between the two communities is one thing and the state of the Republic of Cyprus which is recognised internationally, is another.”

We want an independent country, not a little satellite of Erdogan. We are cypriots, not "greek" or "turk" cypriots. GC and TC are not a nationality.

No, I didn't say that. I've always subscribed to the idea of a just, fair, lasting and meaningful solution. I love this "We are cypriots, not "greek" or "turk" cypriots. GC and TC are not a nationality". I'm amazed at how our GC forum members tell us TC's this at every opportunity and yet I've never seen it said to the likes of Sotos, B25, GiG, GR, Nikitas and hundreds more who sees us as nothing more than parasites on this Greek island.

If you really mean what you say then please prove it. Next time Sotos or Gig tell us this is a Greek island and the Greeks are the natives and we are just Ottoman remnants that should fuck off back to Turkey. If I see a post from you telling them "We are cypriots, not "greek" or "turk" cypriots. GC and TC are not a nationality" then I will be convinced that you really mean it.

Wrong. TC's are Cypriots that have been on the island since 1571 but are seen as outsiders by GC's. We thank Turkey each and every day for saving us from extinction in the hands of barbaric Greeks.
