Its an island, isolated, high-cost of shipping anything here, plus people trying to squeeze as much as they can out of your pocket - imagine an almost empty tube of toothpaste
But seriously, a while ago I was browsing a Japanese used card exporting business - the cars they sell there for 1500-2000 USD end up in the local "Andreas&sons" type business for 8-10 000 EUR (or MORE!). If you don't believe me, have a look yourself. Of course, about 1/3 of that price difference is the customs duty+VAT + excise, all three being applicable for importing cars here, but the rest 2/3 goes in the pocket of Andreas and his sons
Have a look yourself :
http://www.tradecarview.com/You see, it's all economies of scale down here...back in Germany where you are from, a car dealer sells few hundred cars per month, hence makes enough to keep himself and the fraulein happy, whilst at the same time not gouging out the eyes of his customer. Down here in Cyprus, they limited business ideas, mainly peripteros, car imports, restaurants, etc. , hence why there are 3 car dealers every square meter, they sell 3-4 cars per month likely, and hence on those few cars, they must make thousands, in order to keep afloat and keep the missus happy . Get it now?
P.S. No, there is no "shortcut" or miracle way to buy a decently priced car down here in Kyproulla, you can just be patient and wait till a good priced one comes up, but do keep in mind, as you've probably see on the local websites, there are tons of "buying businesses" as well, whereas they buy any cheaply priced cars and introduce them back in the overpriced lots, so the circle is complete
