'Fire risk' Beko fridge started house blaze which killed father

JOHN DUNNE Tuesday 5 August 2014

A father died after saving his family from a blaze caused by a fridge freezer model with a history of fire risk, an inquest heard today.

The software engineer died from a lack of oxygen to the brain after inhaling fumes when the Beko fridge caught alight.

The fire was caused by a faulty switch on their Beko fridge freezer, Barnet Coroner's Court was told.

ONE of Britain’s biggest white goods companies has been blamed for the deaths of at least 11 people in fires or carbon monoxide poisonings caused by its appliances.

Beko, which is a sponsor of the FA Cup, is alleged to have failed to issue adequate public warnings about the risks posed to customers by its fridge freezers and gas cookers.

Despite being alerted to the potentially deadly problems with appliances by fire chiefs and regulators, it is claimed that delays in the Turkish-owned company’s response, or inadequate alerts, led to more deaths.

They used to be the cheapest on the market - I mean dirt cheap!

cyprus35104-210.html

I didn't know they were Turkish and several years ago I bought an electric cooker made by them for a flat I was renting out. Within a month the tenants complained the knobs kept falling off.

When I went to check, it was shocking to see that the numbers on the dials had also rubbed off from cleaning.

That's when I checked where they were made. :o I didn't ask for a replacement. I just changed it and have stuck to Italian or German makes since then.

Not happy with appliances (barely use them myself) but other people seem to find them indispensable.

Oh dear.

7,000 cookers with carbon monoxide risk STILL being used in British kitchens

Makers Beko tried to contact 21,000 customers after they discovered the stoves give off high levels of the deadly fumes.
