Following the July suggestion by both Cypriot leaders to use the following naming convention for a new Cyprus - "The United States of Cyprus" as follows, it appears that President Akinci has informed the Turkish Cypriot camp [as early as this week] that "of the two names that were considered, The Federal Republic of Cyprus and the United States of Cyprus, the one that looks more likely is the latter".

He pinned this due to two fundamental reasons, which his negotiating have said falls in line with the swaying of the Political and Government "balancing" of powers. In simple words, by having the "United States of Cyprus", the concerns amplified by the Turkish Cypriot camp of its "Guarantees and Securities as an equal entity" would be envisaged from the very naming of the Country's political structure. By referring to Cyprus' official Government name as the "United States of Cyprus" would imply that the new Constitution and it's Two Constituent States are based on a "Founding" agreement, and one that is indivisible. In short, One can not over rule the other and one can not act alone as part of the "United State of Cyprus" constitution. This, will settle the "Guarantees" requirement of the Turkish camp.
Also, it has been agreed that the Federal government of these "United" Constituent States will safeguard the rights and responsibilities of state [equal governments] and of the states themselves in relationship to the Central federal government of the "United States of Cyprus".
Akinci's top negotiator said that for the first time we are actually discussing, with agreement, all aspects of the Cyprus issue with a Greek Cypriot that has the sole aim of finally agreeing to a true Federal government comprising of two politically equal, and working, entities.
Although I have been deeply pessimistic of the years in the belief that a solution can be compromised, Mr Nicos Anastasiades is showing signs of a true statesman.
Let's hope the GC hardline camp do not spoil his dream!
