MERRY BLOODY CHRISTMAS

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Viewpoint » Thu Dec 29, 2005 12:12 pm

Its all a matter of give and take, although Im pretty certain everyone would like for all refugees to go back this will not be possible, there will be cases where compensation will be the key. If you try to achieve this as one of the steps to be taken forcing it TCs prior to a solution you will not get any real attempt at solving this issue. But if people feel that refugees will return but they will not be thrown onto the streets but provided alternative accomadation and that there will be equal political representation or a formula that would ensure the best interests of TCs, etc etc then this would be easier to understand and accept.

The current climate only serves the hardening of views and positions and will in the long run do more damage than good.

Most people will probably not go back to their property even if they get a chance - however, it is their choice. By giving them the choice we will most likely see the bi-zonal thing develope anyway...

I think most people would prefer to collect rent for a couple of years, and then sell off to put the money in property where they really want to live.

Yep best budies. They only burnt EOKA members alive and spent weeks hunting Grivas and Co through the mountains. Not to forget that they were holding 16 of the members in prison.

Where do you get this from?

So why not cut to the chase and get this problem out of the way. There comes a point when choice is not the be all and end all of a problem.

Because some people will prefer to go back and live in their old property in the TC zone - and that is their right.

Hopefully that will happen now with the new "property law", to start with.

I disagree. Most people will not go IF they are forced to live in a Turkish state part of a disguised partition "solution". Remember that the Turks didn't want to live in a Greek state either. Why should Greek Cypriots accept to live in an area called Turkish and run by TCs, when they are the legal majority of this area?

The compromise between partition and union with Greece is made already in 1960. Greek Cypriots will simply make no further compromises, and Turkish Cypriots should not expect to gain on our loss anything.

I believe there is a consensus to a bi-zonal solution. Clearly that is not what everyone wants, bit still, at least officially there is a majority for this.

What is under discussion - or should be - is which issues will be decided at the zone-level and which ones will be decided at central level (federal, island council or what ever it is called). Note though that most things are anyway decided in Brussels - which we should be happy with.

If you start looking at which issues should go where in detail, there is really not that many options.
