NATO certainly can and that is what he was saying. However, very unlikely that NATO would. They would just provide Turkey with enough assistance to defend itself. That is the only charter of NATO.

But even before then, NATO will give proper and due attention to avoid any war between Russia and Turkey.

Turkey is NOT free to do what it wants. It can't just stir shit and then expect NATO to bail their arse. Turkey has responsibilities which are dictated by the NATO alliance. NATO has no charter which dictates any action which will lead to an all out war with Russia and result in its occupation by Western Forces. Such things are irresponsible and risk a major holocaust and that is NOT what NATO is about. It is a deterrent to such a thing, nothing more.

If Russia attack Turkey, then NATO is obliged to act.

I seriously doubt the Turkish government would make these kinds of statements because they would have been slapped down by NATO and USA.

Russia is very limited at what it can do, and so far its all just hot air talk.

Russia certainly can't just attack Turkey unless Pootin has a death wish. I don't think he has.

The way things are going, there could be a peace settlement in Syria within the next few weeks. Negotiations are currently focused on building trust between rebel groups such as the FSA and the Assad Regime until a settlement is achieved and an agreement for transition of power.

A settlement is going to involve most rebel groups, but some are excluded (DAESH, Al Nusra, and some other Jihadist groups).

With such an agreement, there should be greater cooperation between the Coalition and Russia, so Turkey has to be very careful. They are on a leash.

NATO may defend Turkey, NATO will not follow Turkey (read: Erdogan) into Russia, or against Russia, other than, in Turkey.

...what Erdogan says is for internal consumption. He has no credibility anywhere else. He may think that he can still control the situation, but by the conflict he sows, he will also go too far, if he hasn't already.
