Paphitis:
If it isn't that old and it is proof that the Syria Group are actually talking about a Federal Solution as one option.
I take it you mean’
The Friends of Syria Group’? Which is a group initiated by Zarcosy and set up by the USA and seems to be now comprised of 11 States that are mostly (
9 of the 11) coalition members. So impartiality is hardly a consideration.
http://www.moonofalabama.org/2013/04/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-friends-of-syria-group.htmlAnd the BBC link above is only 3 days old and in it is an admission that Russia has divulged to Staffan de Mistura that they are happy with regime change or transition as we as fresh elections under UN Auspices as long as there is no power vacuum.
Russia always has been content with regime change providing the decision is that of the Syrian people. So this is nothing new .... it is historic fact. They have never accepted enforced regime change dictated by the US and its partners, nor does the UN.
BTW: Your link to the HARDtalk interview does not work outside the UK apparently .... although I did watch the programme live and Mistura came down firmly on the side of Russia to the annoyance of Sackur.
Miltiades, I have been telling you for a long time now. There is no way Assad can rule over the people of Syria and maintain peace and security. It's not a position held only by the Coalition but it appears Russia does not want a decade long war in its client state.
As the Russians have always said ....
who rules Syria is the decision of the Syrian people .... it has sod all to do with the US and its coalition. The war would never have started had it not been for the US’s determination to change the regime in Damascus and thought they could use the US armed Islamic terrorists to do the fighting for them.
In the end, the superpowers look after their interests and Assad is also interfering with Russian interests let alone the. Coalition. Pootin will bury Assad eventually once the Swiss Cheese holds line up
.
Assad is the only one that stands a chance of stabilising Syria and taking on the task of recovery, at least to some semblance of what it was before the US stuck its oar in. The majority of the people living in the Government controlled areas ...
that’s 70% of the population ..... recently voted overwhelmingly to return Assad as their elected President and that is what I would expect to see when they are in a position to repeat the process under the auspices of the UN.
