Never had a lot of time for him but he's probably right on this.

This was seminal Benn. I adored the man. Quite like his son who is shadow foreign secretary now, I believe.

This is what Benn wrote in his diary after meeting Makarios:

I went up to Archbishop Makarios and we had a chat. He said, “Of course you know that although I am President of Cyprus I still have to work on a Sunday?” He was very funny. When I asked him what the attitude of the Greek Orthodox Church was to the pill, he said, “Well, we leave it to the individual”. He said he was afraid this question would come up when he visited the Pope who did in fact say “Archbishop, what is the population of Cyprus?” Makarios said he braced himself and gave the answer and the Pope replied, “That’s rather more than I imagined” and moved on to a different subject. He had a great twinkle in his eye, a most amusing man. I imagine Field Marshal Harding must have had a job with Makarios when Harding was Governor of Cyprus.

("Office Without Power")

Such a sweet, kindly gentleman. :)

Never trust a politician! What a let-down to your father's name, Hilary!

Hilary Benn, the shadow foreign secretary, was the main focus of anger for protesters as he was accused online of warmongering and bringing shame on his late father, Tony Benn, who had strong roots in the anti-war movement.
Guardian

Very sorry, but he is morally so wrong to have backed Cameron, even if his political credentials have been hyped to what he would have deserved (previous to this outburst).

Miltiades

Brilliant speech, intelligent and eloquent,

By the way, just as Tony Benn, the father, Hilary too is a friend of Cyprus.

Eloquent as ever and as one would expect with a pedigree like that. I've been a long term fan of Hilary, and over the last two Labour Leader elections wished he would have been a candidate.

But sadly now, disappointed he did not follow in his father's peace first initiatives.

Maybe he's putting the resurrection of the Labour party above morals but this is a sad long-term mistake of a strategy.

Who put him up to this?

Woman, its a battle against savages that threaten the very fibre of our western world, as he said, the hate us, they hate our way of life, they stand for death not life.
Good on him for having the sense and the courage to speak out.
These medieval SAVAGES have to be eradicated, sent back to the dark ages along with their warped barbaric ideology.
ZITO O HILARY BENN !!

That's anyone's guess but, midst the nest of "Poofters" that occupy the Houses of Parliament, it would not surprise me in the least if the said Gentleman has become known [to his counterparts] as "Hilary Benn-Dover" [if you catch my drift]. 8)

Britain made the correct decision and is mobilizing additional aircraft in the fight against DAESH in Iraq and now Syria.

The coalition welcomes Britain's involvement and considers it invaluable.

And how do you propose we try the "peace first" approach with DAESH?

We need to be careful about upgrading their legitimacy. It's not possible.

Here's a bit of really interesting trivia regarding Hilary Benn.
My cousin, a Cypriot, was the boyfriend (actually, passionate lover according to him) of Tony Benn's live-in au pair in the 1960s when the family lived in Holland Park in the 1960s, he often paid "social" visits to the house. I imagine the young lady, from Germany, was Hilary's nanny. :)
