Where best to settle in Cyprus

Postby 36510 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 11:15 pm

I´m planning to relocate to Cyprus but have no idea yet where to take residence. Which are the more desirable regions? Are there regions which I should avoid? I´m retired, so job opportunities aren´t relevant for me. Neither is nightlife. Don´t care about beaches either. Any suggestions?

If you are retired and just want your peace and quiet, and beautiful beaches I suggest:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrgos,_Cyprus

It's a rather isolated area, I did most of my army service there. Beautiful sceneries and peace and quiet.

If you don't want beaches I suggest considering one of the more developed villages near the Troodos area. This way you won't suffer the intense heat during the summer and noone will ever bother you.

You sound like the perfect candidate for a place like Kakopetria.

...or try Platres, in the mountains too, cool in the summer, quiet, clear skies where you see the stars at night; there are rivers that flow in the winter and spring, beautiful.

cheers, welcome.

You told us what you don't care about but you should also tell us what you do care about. How important are these factors: Cost of property, availability of services (fast internet, doctors, large supermarkets...), nice views, quiet vs lots of things to do, do you want to live in places where other expats live (I assume you are British) etc etc

Maybe he is coming to Cyprus for its sunshine and to avoid the cold... Troodos can get very cold in winter and it also rains much more often (and it can snow also)

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated. Will I be able to get by in English in the smaller villages? Will there be decent internet? I also read that the sewerage system might have room for improvement so that you might not be able to flush toilet paper by default but that there are devices available which mulch paper so that you can flush it. Are these easy to get by?
As I like riding my pedelec: do some of the places suggested offer good opportunitues to do so (e.g. pathways in the forest or countryside)?

You should be fine with just English anywhere in Cyprus. Internet speeds vary... in some areas in the main cities you can get up to 120Mbit, in some remote villages they might not even have broadband (in remote areas you can get relatively fast internet with satellite, but that is expensive and had high latency (so no good for video calls)). Flashing the toilet paper is something that depends on each individual house, not an issue with the "sewerage system' ... in fact apart from the main urban and suburban areas there is no "sewerage system"... each house has its own septic tank. About the pedelec I am not sure... obviously there are roads and pathways everywhere, but very few places have paths specifically for bicycles.
