Are the SBAs 'British' territories or are they RoC?

Postby GreekIslandGirl » Thu Oct 22, 2015 12:43 am

It depends ....

Refugee agency contradicts MoD claims that 114 asylum seekers who arrived to British base after being abandoned by people smugglers are not UK responsibility

The UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, has said that the UK is legally obliged to resettle more than a hundred Syrian refugees who arrived by boat at a British military base in Cyprus, contradicting claims from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that they were a Cypriot responsibility.

Those territories should be given to RoC. They are a remnant of colonialism. If the UK wants bases then they can negotiate with the RoC to lease some non-sovereign bases.

IMO as a Brit .......

If the British claim these areas are 'Sovereign' territory then the refugees are their responsibility and are in effect in the UK.

If, as some spokesman said when asked whether they were a UK responsibility "That is not our understanding" then the British should move out of the bases and return the land to the owners. Then the Cypriots can deal with the problem ..... but in that case it will be at least 20 years before any decision will be made. A lot of little brown envelopes will have to change hands before any action is even started.

Simple .... you can't have your cake and eat it!

Looks like the Bases are reverting more and more to being the RoC's recognised areas as once again the British shirk their responsibilities.

Cyprus has agreed to process the asylum claims of all the refugees and migrants who arrived at the base, despite the UN’s view that they are Britain’s responsibility.

Under a 2003 agreement between the UK and Cyprus, asylum seekers arriving directly on to the SBAs on the island are the responsibility of the UK, to be granted access to services in Cyprus at Britain’s cost.

These situations are seen everywhere there are illegal immigrants.

Fact is, it takes time to verify the identities of the individuals and some have no papers. The Brits are obligated to house them and process their asylum claims and it isn't a simple process because you wouldn't want to allow a felon or even a possible terrorist into a neighborhood near you. There is only an agreement that Cyprus is to assess the claims but at Britain's cost!

The refugees will get frustrated and angry!

"return the land to the owners"?
The owners are the UK, this land was never part of RoC.
